From Utah, a grim report of a winter journey made by army troops under Captain Marcy from Ft. Thank you for posting this valuable text.

Though hard to read in it's current (1858) vernacular, the incite these scripts provide for posterity of the political manipulation, and haranguing that led to the war between the states is enlightening.

“Senator Houston offered resolutions in favor of establishing a protectorate over Mexico and Central America, which after debate were laid on the table.”

There is a modest plan!

The Brigham Young and LDS indictments were another chapter in the Utah War, when Buchanan sent much of the Army to the West because the government considered Utah in rebellion against the United States.

Until these threads, Homer, I did not appreciate just how close it was that Kansas came to admission as a slave state.

I suspect that if that had happened the free-staters would have gone into open rebellion.
