Putin Accuses Foes of 'Excessive Demonization' of Stalin in Oliver Stone interviews

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the "excessive demonization" of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin "is one means of attacking the Soviet Union and Russia."

Putin made the comments in the last of four installments of a series of interviews that he gave to U.S. filmmaker Oliver Stone, which was aired on June 15, 2017.

In the past, Putin has praised Stalin as an "effective manager," and Stalin's reputation in Russia has been growing steadily since Putin came to power in 2000.

A poll in April by the independent Levada research center found that 25 percent of Russians consider Stalin's repressions "historically justified," while another 13 percent said they knew "nothing" about Stalin's crimes.

Forty-seven percent of respondents agreed "it is better to speak less about the repressions and not to dig up the past."

Attacking, rightfully, the actions of Stalin is not a reflection on the Russian people who took back control of their nation. It is, however, a reflection on those who would like to go back to the days of the USSR.

Right. Why demonize the man? He never murdered more than - say - 10 million people.

Putin fanboy club leader = Oliver Stone

Title: “Hitler and Stalin weren’t so bad”

“Hitler is an easy scapegoat throughout history and it’s been used cheaply,” Stone said during a discussion about a 10-hour TV special he’s putting together called “Oliver Stone’s Secret History of America.” Stone believes the American educational system has given kids a distorted view of history’s heroes and villains.

“We can’t judge people as only ‘bad’ or ‘good,’” Stone told the Television Critics Association. “[Hitler] is the product of a series of actions. It’s cause and effect. People in America don’t know the connection between WWI and WWII.”

Of Stalin, who historians believe may have been responsible for 20 million deaths, Stone said: “Stalin has a complete other story. Not to paint him as a hero, but to tell a more factual representation. He fought the German war machine more than any person.”

Not to mention Oliver Stone’s defenses of Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro!

And to add:

The younger Stone “has a history of defending anti-American authoritarian leaders,” per the Free Beacon, including former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, whom Sean Stone called “misunderstood.”

Getting ready to make the same reply. Besides being our “ally” in WWII, he gets off of the hook because his brutal methods weren’t as “industrial” as Hitler’s. Repeated cases of bullets to the back of kneeling prisoners’ heads doesn’t seem quite as brutal as well-organized, efficient death camps where hundreds left the trains, gassed, and were cremated within hours.

Imagine if Merkel said “excessive demonization” of Hitler was an attack on modern Germany...

Stalin made his contemporary and one time ally Hitler look like a small time street corner thug. He could be charming, witty, and was quite intelligent. But the gears were always turning and no one could predict who or which group would next be made to disappear from the scene. The book Stalin: The Court of the Red Czar is maybe the best and most thoroughly readable biography of this human monster.

That’s right. And FDR and others called him “Uncle Joe”. How nice/s.

To show how thorough and effective the Communist indoctrination is, when Stalin died, many people he had put in the Gulag’s, actually wept.

Wow. Talk about revisionism. Unbelievable.

Stalin used to stay up at night signing death sentences, and when you talk about numbers, 20 million is quite a lowball estimate. As far as Hitler goes, I don't care what ‘series of actions’ fed into Hitler's craziness. There is no excuse for genocide, nor any of the other suffering he caused. He, like Stalin, AND like too many current politicians in America and elsewhere, was driven by a huge ego. It's always the ego that underlies the actions of dictators and would-be dictators.

Putin’s point is that the ship has sailed. He doesn’t want people to feel guilty over Stalin. Hitler guilt didn’t serve Germans well.

25 percent of Russians consider Stalin’s repressions “historically justified,....................... Yeah, like Hitler’s. s/ Who did they poll, the children of the NKVD who’s parents, unlike the nazis, escaped prosecution. The best thing that occurred in Russia was the death of Stalin, he apparently was on the verge of eliminating Jews like Hitler did. Had he done that, what would the world have done to stop it? I don’t see a fleet of B-47’s dropping A bombs, and the UN action most likely would have been a reprimand? Russian politics at the time is like ours today, too many dirty hands, covering for each other’s criminal activities. At least we aren’t at the point of Lubyanka or the mines of Kolyma and the others. (Not yet, anyway.)

Right, and rehabilitating Stalin's image, banning satire films like "The Death of Stalin" -- is really helping the Russian people move forward...

Not.

To people today, they don’t see Stalin as a Communist, more like a Czar, in the tradition of Ivan the Terrible, whom Stalin modeled himself after.
