BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Airlines have to pay compensation to passengers for delays caused by wildcat strikes that result from management decisions, the European Union’s top court said on Tuesday.

Several cases were brought to the EU’s Court of Justice after German airline TUIfly said a 2016 wildcat strike - one not formally initiated by a trade union - was an extraordinary event, and so it was not liable to compensate for delays.

The strike followed the company’s announcement of a restructuring plan.

EU regulation gives passengers on a delayed flight the right to compensation of up to 600 euros ($745), depending on the distance of the flight.

Airlines are exempt from paying this if they can show there were “extraordinary circumstances” which they could not have reasonably avoided.

How about having the unions compensate the passengers? This seems to be a obvious way to help the unions by handicapping the airlines if they don't cave immediately. It's a win win for organized labor.

Workers of the world unite!

Isn’t Brussels essentially the NWO headquarters?

Airlines should have to compensate for ANY and ALL delays.
There is never a legitimate excuse for anything being late.

So a airline is responsible for delays due to wild cat strikes. You do know what a wild cat strike is don’t you?

Around here, I don’t think there has ever been a (University of Kentucky) Wildcat strike.

Or at least split the bill 50/50 by having the union foot their portion.

The EU is extortight the airlines. Make it so costly that the airlines will accede to the unions’ demands.

Note to the airlines: Shoulda brought a longer spoon.

How do you ran a business, especially an airline which is heavily regulated, when no one suddenly, without warning, shows up for work? The least the EU court could do was order the unions to split the cost with the airlines. If the airlines are showing good faith in negotiating than I don’t see why they should have to foot the full bill.
