Yes, it is refreshing to read real, fact-based, evidence based science.

“And there’s not a thing we can do about it. “

Are you sure there isn’t something we can tax? Regulate?

Quick, let’s get AL Gore and give him $200 million so that he can make offerings & prayers to the pagan gods so that the earth would be spared another disaster. /Sarc

“Earth changes Jupiter and Venus’s orbit every 405,000 years.”

We are so self-centered. Did anyone ever stop to think how we affect Venus and Jupiter?

“Change Earth’s Orbit”
Correction:
“Have a very slight effect on Earth’s Orbit.”

Wrong.

Last time it happened was 405,003 years ago.

I saw pictures of it on Google.

Earth experiences periodic changes in its climate (which are related to changes in its orbit) has been understood for almost a century.

Uh...not by many! Any valid climate change argument (i.e. man-made global warming) should be backed up by empirical evidence. I am quite sure that natural forces, such as the gravity of the sun and changes in elliptical orbits of the moon and planets in our solar SYSTEM have way more effect on Earth's climate than air conditioning. Somehow I think the global warming crowd will ignore such findings!

I hate it when that happens.

"...Ha! Perturbed by Venus after all!...

As long as we are not influenced by Uranus.

Wait, did someone else beat me to a juvenile Uranus reference? It had to be done.

Lincoln gave approval for the mass murder of my noncombatant people.

Not a fan.

Thanks BenLurkin. Uh, no. :^) More gradualist nonsense -- ironically, claiming that Venus (which at its current average distance has less influence on the Earth than does the Earth's Moon, or than does Jupiter, for that matter) has been in its current orbit for 405,000 years while summoning up "Worlds In Collision".

I didn’t bother to read the article until you sent out the thread, but as a pragmatist with a maximum future of maybe 20 years, am I likely to be hurt physically, emotionally, sexually or fiscally by this phenomenon?

If not, screw it.

You miss the point. As a dyed in the wool accretionist, I suggest that gravity of orbital bodies attraction on earth is in constant flux but generally inadequate to effect orbital distances.

The article is suggesting that gravity is additive and the orbital positions of Venus and Jupiter increase the gravitational attraction on earth in a manner that produces change.

The effect of the earth gravity on Venus and Jupiter is in fact unknown but is not changed on the individual planets.

Refreshing and a little surreal. Has sort of a '50s or '60s retro feel to it.
Like you walked through a door and found yourself in a malt shop
with bobby soxers and guys with ducktails. Familiar but dreamlike.

Just wait until the Jupiter-Venus-Mars-Mercury coincidence makes the asteroid belt come back around Earth. We’ll have high tide every two hours! Aiee!
