I was taught, and I believe, that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament, not the "unhitching" of the Old Testament.
Anyone have any comments on this?
This is all about normalizing homosexuality. He’s just pretending it’s not by using other issues.
Unhitch —
That’s why Paul, and even Jesus quoted it.
Ping.
I suspect that this jasper has an agenda.
In any case, I don't think there is any crisis caused by following the Old Testament. Really that's the least of our worries. I mean, seriously, the world adhering to Leviticus doesn't seem to be an issue that comes up often …
Stanley is either ignorant on the NT or he's a liar. Peter and Paul preached Jesus Christ from the scriptures. That means the Old Testament. James never led his church at Jerusalem out of the temple. Does that sound like James abandoned the OT?
Paul warned the church about Andy Stanley and his ilk:
3For the time is coming when people will not endure sounda teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 2Timothy 4:3-4
So what Old Testament prohibition does Stanley wish to avoid?
I’m betting homosexuality.
From past experience with folks who want to “unhitch” from the Old Testament, I suspect there are parts of the New Testament he doesn’t like either. That will probably come next, so I’d ask him the question now. “There are parts of the New Testament that sound a lot like some parts of the Old Testament. Would you like to cut some of them out now, before our discussion goes any further?”
If he says, “No,” I’d get it in writing.
If following the Jewish law saved you, there would be no need for a Savior......except no one can follow the Law perfectly.
You cannot “unhitch” it because Jesus cites the OT frequently as do the NT writers. So I am guessing Stanley isn’t saying what he said.
I disagree with Mr. Stanley. I don’t think we can take Jesus Christ out of context like that.
My pastor once said if he could rip one page out of the Bible it would be the divider page that says “New Testament”. Not one “jot or tittle” else.
Well, he’s wrong.
The New Testament is a fulfilment of prophecy contained in the Old Testatment but, we aren’t out of Exodus because of Christ’s resurrection.
My nephew goes to this blasphemer’s church.
OT context is critical to authority of NT — fulfillment of prophecy, etc.
... aaaaand he's a liar.
In one sense this is true. There is a movement afoot to claim that it’s okay to pray doom and destruction on our enemies because King David did so. This is false. Jesus superseded the OT morality, especially when it comes to enemies:
Matthew 5:43-48
You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. ...
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Matthew 5:18
When the Apostles preached, they preached first to the Jews and then to the Gentiles. The Jews “searched Scripture” to discern the truth of what they were told. The only Scripture they had at the time was OT. The Bible Itself quotes the OT.
Any preacher who fails to see the seamlessness of Scripture and the teachings of the Apostles doesn’t understand the faith he pretends to preach... or he’s preaching with an agenda.
In the final part of a recent sermon series, Stanley explained that while he believes that the Old Testament is “divinely inspired,” it should not be “the go-to source regarding any behavior in the church.”

Yet I would be you a hundred bucks the good pastor still preaches and teaches tithing.
This is heresy plain and simple.
