Profs say female STEM grades don’t reflect ‘perceived effort’
Campus Reform ^ | June 4, 2018 | Toni Airaksinen

Four Otterbein University professors suggest that women may be averse to STEM fields because they feel they work harder than male students without earning higher grades.

After conducting a study of 828 students in STEM classes, the professors discovered that while women felt they put more effort into their classes than men, they received approximately equivalent grades, which “indicates that women's higher perceived effort levels are not rewarded."

When they start out with 'Equity of Outcomes', this should come as no surprise.

can't wait to see what the grade curve will be called...

That is a good point. However, we used to have data to go by. According to the tests, women on average scored higher on verbal skills and men excelled in the spatial/mathematical area.

In a post modern world no doubt ways have been devised to hide these differences. But the data is still there, regardless.

Effort = grade is like Marx’s erroneous labor = value. It ain’t so.

Then, you add in that we’re talking about feelz as the measure of effort and the whole issue is bogus.

Btw, the bridge collapse story went quiet rather quickly.

It resurfaced to report that a crane operator moved away from the scene immediately after the failure. Then quiet again, since it was moved to allow emergency responders access.

Really, how do we know how much “effort” either is putting in aside from their perceived ideas?

It’s all about feelings and effort, not outcomes.

Thinking they should get rewarded for effort proves they shouldn’t be in STEM in the first place.

I think I tried that line on my fifth grade teacher and was completely rebuked and nearly scolded. Learned my lesson early.

Why is it that the best male chess players are much better than the best female players?

My experience with female engineers (well, at least millenial ones) is that they seem to have a knack at getting others to do their work for them, and then they get big fat diversity awards for doing the most mundane things.

I wonder if the laws of physics, and the principles of engineering that derive from them, will pay any attention.

No, but we sure will when these women get hired into the workforce and design more bridges that collapse onto major thoroughfares and electronics that don't work.

Yep. Shhhh. Women Failing at something doesn't fit the narrative. Particularly when the narrative is "Women must be chosen to lead these projects, whether they're qualified to design them or not."

Gravity doesn't particularly care which bathroom the bridge designer uses. But those on the left wish it did.

Wait, since gender has been rendered meaningless
by “equality” would a transgender guy have to
work harder than a transgender woman or vice versa???

As a competitive cyclist, I am familiar with the concept of “perceived effort.” I can tell you that my perception of the last 10k of a 40k time trial is that I’m laying down the same wattage I was in the beginning. But a quick glance at the power meter shows it’s 25 to 50 percent less.

Perceived effort is worthless as a measure of ACTUAL effort.

the WHOLE point of the article, for anyone who actually read it, is that women get discouraged with STEM studies because even when they put all their efforts into it, "following the rules" their efforts are lumped in with those people who don't...

when they get discouraged, they question why even be in STEM.. ones work is not rewarded..

by "following the rules" I mean they attend class on a regular basis, do all the homework, the research, the projects all on a timely basis...IOWS...take their classes seriously...

it has to be discouraging to see Joe 12 pack sloshing thru classes when he attends and managing to pass as well...

Your heart doctor has got a “perceived effort” diploma from the School of Perceived Efforts. Are you ready for your open heart surgery now?

My unsolicited $0.02? I've no idea why more women don't go into STEM.

STEM disciplines are the ultimate in level playing fields. An engineering design is either good, or it's not. Aesthetics and budget can be argued all day long, but at the end of the day, the engineer's design can either hold the load, or not, and the laws of physics could care less about what the designer looks like.

If ever a woman wanted a completely unbiased, utterly impartial evaluation, Statics and Strengths of Materials (for instance) are it. F = ma, no matter what, every single time.

That feminists demand to be judged by a different, "more fair" set of rules shows that it's not about engineering at all, but politics, power, and social position.
