Interesting stuff, but I would hardly call it a new discovery. Trieste was the principal port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Pola, now Pula, in Istria was the home port of the K.u.K. Kriegsmarine, the Austro-Hungarian Navy. The region was an important part of the Empire. Many of the locals spoke Italian, although farther inland that changed to Slovenian.

An interesting point of trivia is that Captain Von Trapp, of Sound of Music fame, was a distinguished officer in the Navy and made his home in Istria. After the collapse of the monarchy after WWI, the Austrian Navy was disbanded and the Von Trapps moved to German speaking Austria. His first wife died of scarlet fever and, well, you know the rest.
