Evansville anesthesiologist Dale Drake, inspiration for 'M*A*S*H,' dies at 93

hough his impact during the Korean War was significant, Michael Drake said his father, Dale, was not a volunteer.

"He was drafted into the Army to serve as an anesthesiology physician. That was his first job," said Michael, who himself is an anesthesiologist in Evansville.

Dr. Dale Drake, who passed away on Tuesday, was stationed in the 8055 MASH unit in Korea. He was 93 at his death.

Dale, along with his wife, Cathy — who worked in the same unit — would later help Hollywood shape the way America saw the Korean War.

About 10 years after Korea, the Drakes visited Dr. H. Richard Hornberger, a military surgeon they knew during the war.

After an evening of drinking and reminiscing, Hornberger — who used the pen name Richard Hooker — started writing a fictionalized account of the couple's wartime experiences.

Hornberger credited that late-night storytelling session in writing "MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors."

Thank you for your service Doctor. I wonder how many other men's grandchildren are alive today because of your service.

Too bad he couldn’t have made it long enough to see peace finally come to the two Koreas ... Although he definitely saw the start of it.

Naturally, the rag did not mention how badly Hollywood distorted and mangled the book.

That’s what happens every time left-wingers get their hands on something... they destroy it.

Or how much both the author and his friend hated the television program.

Heard him in a conversation on a radio program with Adrian Cronauer, in which both commiserated at how Hollywood tried to turn their work into leftist propaganda.

M*A*S*H through the generations:
1. A good novel reflecting on the chaos and alienation of the Korean War.
2. A mediocre movie reflecting leftist attitudes toward the Vietnam War.
3. A smarmy sitcom TV series of the Gilligan's Island genera.

I always thought it was worse. They maligned the military both the people and mission. I always wanted to see similar shows made about the EPA and IRS.

My former partner in practice was the veterinarian for the MASH Unit at Uijongbu during the same time that this Dr. Drake was there. He knew the surgeons and dentists that served there. He has a wealth of stories about the escapades that these men committed both as medical professionals and tricksters. He's 89 years old now and still going strong.

I’ve read it several times (and like to watch the movie occasionally). I have to say, though, that the first sequel was the superior book- M*A*S*H Goes To Maine. If you can find it, it’s worth a read.

The M.A.S.H theme song.

“Suicide is Painless” (M.A.S.H Theme)

Certainly not something the producers of the show would want everyone to know but nonetheless was a huge part of the show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gO7uemm6Yo

Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
I can take or leave it if I please
That game of life is hard to play

I’m gonna lose it anyway
The losing card of some delay
So this is all I have to say

That suicide is painless

It brings on many changes
I can take or leave it if I please
The sword of time will pierce our skin
It doesn’t hurt when it begins

But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger, watch it burn

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied oh why ask me

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I...Please

And you can do the same thing if you Please.

In the movie, “Painless” was the nickname of the Dentist, who wanted to kill himself after figuring he must be a “fairy.”

WOW.

Considering the time when this was made I could look the Show/Movie as either a sick sarcastic projection of current culture or pure propaganda for the Left’s cerebration of death.

Nothing is sacred.

God help us all.

Hollywood didn’t, and couldn’t, alter the original works.
