The University of Chicago will no longer require ACT or SAT scores from U.S. students, sending a jolt through elite institutions of higher education as it becomes the first top-10 research university to join the test-optional movement.
Numerous schools, including well-known liberal arts colleges, have dropped or pared back testing mandates in recent years to bolster recruiting in a crowded market. But the announcement Thursday by the university was a watershed, cracking what had been a solid and enduring wall of support for the primary admission tests among the two dozen most prestigious research universities.
The private university in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood admits fewer than 10 percent of applicants and ranks third on the U.S. News & World Report list of top national universities, after Princeton and Harvard and tied with Yale. It has required prospective freshmen to take a national admission test since 1957. Before that, it screened applicants with its own tests.
U-Chicago is also expanding financial aid and scrapping in-person admission interviews, which had been optional. Instead, it will allow applicants to send in two-minute video pitches, in an effort to connect with a generation skilled at communicating via cellphone clips.
"Testing is not the be-all and the end-all," said James G. Nondorf, U-Chicago's dean of admissions and financial aid. He said he didn't want "one little test score" to end up "scaring students off" who are otherwise qualified.(snip)
With the change in admissions policy will come a significant boost in financial aid. The university is announcing a guarantee of free tuition for students from families with income under $125,000 a year. For most students with annual family income below $60,000, financial aid will cover tuition, fees, room and board. U-Chicago's full price for students without aid is more than $70,000 in the coming school year.

prof hardly, rarely teach or can teach, pay is out of site, the whole college scene is living in a fantasy world. Neither to they teach reality nor feel it. To them it is if they are not living in the real world of cost and effect, they are above it all and everyone goes into debt with the whole deal so they don’t have to make changes...libs get it all!
Selfish bunch of hypocrites!
and only those with a liberal mindset are allowed to teach - so no diversity among the profs and no real discussions on the campus - so no real critical thinking experiences to draw from later in life and paying $70+ a year for what?
growing another test tube full of lib cells to be injected into the brain...
University of Chicago. Soon to be a wholly owned subsidiary of Bob’s Barber School and Junior college.
This is absurd. I went to law school at the University of Chicago, and I’ll bet they don’t plan to stop requiring the Law School Admission Test scores that keep them ranked in the top 5. I don’t know what the undergraduate admissions people are thinking, unless this is just affirmative action pandering.
When a lot of your applicants score perfect or near perfect scores on these tests the predictive chance of success becomes less reliable. I wonder how many of the people who worry about declining standards of admission get all excited when someone who can’t read at an 8th grade level gets admitted to their favorite school because he can play football.
Unless they get rid of grading classes all together and just take money and hand out a graduation certificate.
Hampshire College allows for no grades in many classes. Seriously - a college that allows you to just take a class, with no grade given. What?
/One former manager informed me that Hampshire is more well known as Hempshire, for the obvious reason. As a lecturer at the university, he was offered pot by his students on more than one occasion.

Select a decent school. ACT scores matter in that case. Schools that do not hold students to standards are not the ones to attend.
Agree!!
He would love to do a smaller private. We are years away but something like Lehigh, Washington & Lee, Elon, George Mason, Case Western, etc.
But it has to have club hockey!
This goes without saying. Unless of course you happen to be a white, transgendered, lesbian, feminist, non-sis, goose stepping, purple haired Marxist. Then they immediately admit you as a teaching assistant with a full SJW scholarship.
You can be very sure standards at U Chicago for whites and Asians are in the stratosphere.
What do you want them to do? With present beliefs, they have to enroll blacks, more than a few. Its no good to say, hold them to standards.
Theyre doing what is possible.
I took both. Inverted individual results, but overall 99%ile in each. SAT seemed harder. ACT seemed broader.
He will do just fine-—he has parents who care.
