I know when my father and his family came to the U.S. in 1912 from Holland, and disembarked at Ellis Island, the men/boys were sent to one area, and the women/daughters sent to another area to be evaluated, and medically examined. My father had two brothers, so they all went with their father. That meant my grandmother was separated from the rest of her family until they were all cleared.
According to this article, children can be separated if there is no family relation to the adults, or of there is reason to believed the children are in danger such as child trafficking. Due to 1997 Flores consent decree, ICE can only hold minor for 20 days, period. Since children can not be legally held as long as adults, they are placed under HHS custody. Unless congress changes the law and there is a challenge that goes through he Federal courts, after 20 days children will have to be taken away form their families no matter what other policies are in place.

Also, back in 2016, the Supreme Court doomed Obama’s immigration policy because the vote was tied 4-4. Under the proposal, adults in the United States illegally could remain if they meet certain residency requirements and have children who are American citizens or lawful permanent residents. It would also expand another program, now in effect, that allows young people to stay in the country if they were brought here under age 16.

If Mrs DoodleBob and I were scofflaws and were pondering illegally entering Lichtenstein and thought the likelihood of us being separated from the little DoodleBobs was high, I think we'd stay at home.
To be fair, this threat of separation was small under the Obama regime. And, to be sure, a parent may face a Hobson's choice in staying in, say, North Korea vs risking separation. I get it.
But Mexico isn't NK - it's not a sh**hole, remember? And Trump has been around for about 18 months. So...The question not being asked is: what does it say about the parents, that they're willing to risk separation from their flesh and blood, in breaking the law?

Your explanation makes perfect sense. It is the reality of the situation. What makes me angry is that with this forged in steel understanding, there are those who use red herring arguments to muddle the logic. The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 made it easier to deport illegal aliens. While these aliens await their deportation hearing, they are held in detention. Their children are separated from their parents because the detention facilities are a hostile place for children. However, I did not find in the descriptions of this act any language prescribing the course of action for the children.
