Hermit who escaped civilization to live naked on a desert island is forced to return to Japan by authorities after 29 YEARS
82-year-old Masafumi Nagasaki 'escaped' civilisation in 1989 for life of solitude
He stayed on rarely visited Sotobanari island even fishermen don't go there
But Japanese authorities moved him back to mainland after he was found 'weak'
Nagasaki can't return to the island and lives 60km away in a house in the city
Japanese authorities denied a man the chance his wish to die a castaway on an island he called home for three decades.
Masafumi Nagasaki was the only inhabitant of the kilometre-wide Sotobanari island but was forced to return to civilisation after being found unwell by police.
He lived in solitude since 1989 and became known as the 'naked hermit' after being discovered by a traveller who writes about castaways.
Alvaro Cerezo told news.com.au Nagasaki was evicted after someone found him on the island looking 'weak'.
Police were called and he has been taken to live in a government house 60km away in Ishigaki city.
Cerezo added his health is okay and he 'probably only had the flu' when he was found, remarking that Nagasaki's island life is 'over' as he isn't allowed to return.
Nagasaki's story first came to light in 2012.
He shunned mainstream society in the early nineties to set up base on the little island of Sotobanari where there is no running water.
The remote spot, which is just a kilometre wide, is in Japan's tropical Okinawa prefecture and located closer to Taiwan than Tokyo.

Sure, but he had plenty of sunshine, a private beach, all the seafood he could eat, and no boss man telling him what to do :)
I’m guessing the reporter guy who found him gave that to him and asked him to get some footage for him.

THE STATE
Who did he catch the flu from??
Paging Jeff Probst........
I was wondering that but since he has been discovered he does get visitors and he also goes to a nearby island to get supplies so it is conceivable that he picked up the virus from one of these two contacts. He would not build up an immunity to the various flu strains, not being in contact with too many folks.
What did he do to get fresh water?
If he was by himself then how did he catch the flu?
Normally you can only get the flu from other humans or certain animals.
I thought that to but it does say in the article that he had human contact through visitors and periodic supply trips.

And how did he pay for his supplies? I got a feeling he wasn’t as independent as he’s made out to be.

Lots of green there for a “desert” island.
His family sent him money.
Even as a kid watching Gilligan I could not understand why it was called a “desert island” as opposed to “deserted Island”.

I figured the go-pro was the reporters. But in the article it says he goes to another island to buy water and rice cakes with money that his family sends him. (So not as big of a hermit as the headline says). Perhaps his family also gave him the camera to stay in touch with him.
Although after the first few weeks, I’m guessing the videos would get pretty boring.
