For evangelical Christian leaders like Jerry Falwell Jr., this is their political holy grail.
Like many religious conservatives in a position to know, the Liberty University president with close ties to the White House suspects that the Supreme Court vacancy President Donald Trump fills in the coming months will ultimately lead to the reversal of the landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade. But instead of celebrating publicly, some evangelical leaders are downplaying their fortune on an issue that has defined their movement for decades.
What people dont understand is that if you overturn Roe v. Wade, all that does is give the states the right to decide whether abortion is legal or illegal, Falwell told The Associated Press in an interview. My guess is that thered probably be less than 20 states that would make abortion illegal if given that right.
Falwell added: In the 70s, I dont know how many states had abortion illegal before Roe v. Wade, but it wont be near as many this time.
The sentiment, echoed by evangelical leaders across the country this past week, underscores the delicate politics that surround a moment many religious conservatives have longed for. With the retirement of swing vote Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, Trump and his Republican allies in the Senate plan to install a conservative justice who could re-define the law of the land on some of the nations most explosive policy debates none bigger than abortion.

States’ Rights to decide if Capital Murder is legal or illegal?
I don’t like the “libertarian” argument either. Why are they even discussing it?
“States Rights to decide if Capital Murder is legal or illegal?”
Yep! Murder is a state crime. Federal law normally doesn’t cover it.

“The left is going to try very hard to say this is all about overturning Roe, said Johnnie Moore, a Southern Baptist minister who was a co-chairman of the Trump campaigns evangelical advisory board. The more significant shift on the high court, he said, would likely be the help given to conservatives in their fight for what they call religious freedom.”
I agree. Only the AP would call this “the best of times” for religious people. We ARE under attack, and the power of government has been used increasingly to crush Christians. Things unthinkable 25 years ago are now common place. Heck, Bill Clinton signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act - which passed the Senate 97-3 in 1993.
Is there any doubt the same act would be filibustered by Democrats today, and that many Republicans would vote against it as well?

It is a great time to be secure in your faith as the nation’s commitment to God crumbles and the culture ridicules us. We may very well be called upon to be America’s Dietrich Bonhoeffer in our lifetimes.
Remember, in Christ you don’t really die.
Very good points, sadly.
“Evangelical” is a term the poll companies made up in the early 1960s.
Democrats openly booed God, Israel, and the Boy Scouts at their political convention.
We aren’t in 20th century America anymore.
“Why are they even discussing it?”
Because it is a fact. If Roe is overturned, then it reverts back to the States. In order to ban abortion nationwide, you need either 1) a constitutional amendment or 2) an act of Congress that would pass muster with SCOTUS.
I passionately dislike the idea that some conservatives promote that overturning Roe vs. Wade has to be downplayed so a Justice must be selected who has never taken a strong stand against Roe vs. Wade.
That approach resulted in Justice Souter.
That approach resulted in Justice Kennedy.
Protecting preborn babies is not something to be ashamed of and hidden.
Protecting preborn babies is something to be proud of and shown.
I meant, why are they giving credence to the left’s premise?
Before Roe, it was Reagan’s CA, Rockefeller’s NY, Love’s CO, and I think HI who encouraged legal abortion. Far more than four states will keep the popular but infamous practice. I can envision the outcry when TX “girls” have to go to Albuquerque to get their abortion, or LA “girls” to FL.
The Boy Scouts were so offended by the Democrats’ invective that they would end up joining them!
Apparently some within the organization liked their initiation into homosexuality via the Scouts and wanted to see other youth given the same “education”.
The Roe vs. Wade decision by the SCOTUS.. Is a symptom. Not the disease. The sickness is the darknees and absense of God inside some peoples hearts. And NO law can cleanse a heart.
“If Roe is overturned, then it reverts back to the States. In order to ban abortion nationwide, you need either 1) a constitutional amendment or 2) an act of Congress that would pass muster with SCOTUS.”
That is the most likely scenario. However, a strict interpretation of the Constitution could easily find a “right to life” (in the 5th amendment) that invalidated any laws permitting abortion. They could rule that during any method of ending a pregnancy, every reasonable effort must be made to preserve the life of the child.
