That was before I cancelled my subscription to the Tribune -- after that fateful Easter morning edition which FAILED TO MENTION EASTER.
[Unless there is more to the story, it sure seems uncalled for to me.]
My guess in the context of the note is that the employee knew a lot more about this person than is being reported.
Our town is now being inundated with mentally deranged people due to the local “Family Services” outfit taking in more clients from a wider area. They hang on doorsteps all over town and some harass people for money or just to do it. Overall they are making a nice town look like a hanging dump now.
One guy was changing his pants right in front of the local supermarket right at the front door. One customer pulled in with a nice car and another guy ran up and started accosting him about it and wanting a ride to which he was denied. The driver thought better of it before walking into the store got back in it and left. I’m sure he was worried about vandalism while he was in the store.
I’m so glad they closed the psychiatric centers.
A customer purchased the drink (and cup) for the homeless person. The employee had. no right to deface the cup.
When I was younger, I would never have imagined a shop telling a loiterer they had to move on would be fire-worthy behavior. The world has gone topsy-turvy.
What is this addict/mental illness bum worship? What does it mean?
It was stupid and unprofessional. I get we here like the “FU, and get lost, you bum” message, but this was the most idiotic way of doing it.
Can these places stop writing crap on cups and receipts and just dispense the damn product?
If this person is being a pest, call the cops, or let management know, and let them deal with the fallout.
Okay, if this person is homeless and “hangin’ out in front of the store”, I am going to guess that she does not have full-time employment.
Jeesh!
“What is this addict/mental illness bum worship? What does it mean?”
It’s a by-product of today’s unfortunate virtue-signaling culture.
Virtue signaling seems to be the way that people try to deflect Leftist anger.
I don’t get it. Is homeless a protected government-certified class?
i never , ever give beggars money. Last $$ I put in a cup was for a high school football team.
The horrors!!!!
Except once. I was at a train station and some guy came up to me in US Army BDUs, said he was just discharged and told me he needed train a couple bucks fare to get to somewhere for something. I thought "this seems unusual, just left the army but doesn't have any money at all? But I don't want to be wrong about this". So I gave the guy $10. If he was lying, he gets points for effort and originality. If he was telling the truth I'm glad I helped him get where he was going with enough left over for a coke and some chips. That's the most I ever gave someone who randomly asked me for money.
My Achilles' heel is the street person with a dog or cat ...
There was one outside the HEB in old BDUs, just sitting there with a sign asking for help and an old dog laying beside him. I live near Killeen, Texas, right near Fort Hood, so he could have been a veteran ... or he could have just been someone who had acquired used BDUs.
I went into the store to do my shopping and, as I shopped, I reflected that, but for a couple of lucky breaks during my Army service, that could have been me. I was pretty upset by the time that I checked out.
As I left, I gave him a ten-dollar bill and 10 (I think it was) packages of hot dogs and some packs of cold cuts, figuring that those were food items for both him and the dog as well. He thanked me for the money and immediately opened one of the packs of hot dogs and started feeding them to his dog ...
I'm sorry, but I guess I'm an old softy now ... I had tears running down my cheeks by the time that I got to the car.
Never saw him and the dog again ...
In the end, an act of charity benefits the recipient but it also benefits the giver. Always yielding to the cynic within robs you of that. So sometimes I tell him to shut up and I choose to give something.
There used to be an older homeless woman living in her old car in the parking lot of a 7-11 not too far from where I live. The Indian guys running the 7-11 let her stay there, they’d give her coffee and let her use the restroom to wash up. It’s up to the merchant - homeless people in front of a store are not going to be good for business and most cities have good shelters for the homeless, but if the merchant wants to put up with it, bless them.
Never put in writing what you can say with your mouth.
Never say what you can imply with a gesture.
Uncalled for...with an over-the-top response by the manager.
...Though in today’s environment, even if silly perhaps wise to protect the store.
I never give money...though I will give stuff - or even come back with a sandwich or baked potato.
If they’re hungry, fine. If they only want money, they’re probably up to no good.
