Three teens were involved in flinging cat into local lake (Police investigation)

BELTON, Texas (KWTX) Investigators have identified three teenagers who were involved in flinging a cat into Lake Belton after a short video of the incident went viral on social media.

The video, which first appeared on Snapchat, was posted on Twitter Monday night by a user who tagged both Belton police and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Belton police identified the three teens involved in the incident and then referred the case to the Bell County Sheriff’s Department for further investigation, sheriff’s Maj. T.J. Cruz said Wednesday.

“The case has been assigned to an investigator with the sheriff’s department, who will review the case starting today and will be interviewing parties involved in this incident,” Cruz said.

“When the investigation is completed the appropriate referrals to juvenile authorities will be made,” he said.

No names were released.

The video doesn’t show what happened after the cat landed in the water.

"Did it knock the breath out of it? Did it have a hard time, did it drown because it couldn't breathe? You don't know those things,” Don Bland, the executive director of the Waco Humane Society, said Tuesday.

“So there are so many things on their own, so many different levels that are disturbing for the animal but then it's really hard wrenching to see young kids that are that cruel,” he said.

“These actions are not OK and will not be tolerated,” the individual who posted the video on Twitter told KWTX.

I remember not too long ago, kids throwing the cat in a lake...and it swam back right to them.....so they threw it over and over and over until it was so tired it drowned. Hope they get these kids into counseling or whatever...then again sociopaths seldom change...maybe just euthanize these monsters.

Kids that torture animals grow up to be adults that torture people.

The same as with corrupt law enforcement and sexual abuse of children.
Those things didn’t blossom at all in recent years, but now there are ubiquitous cameras so denial of them is hard to maintain.

Thanks for your reply.

I didn’t watch the video but making the cats swim doesn’t strike me as too bad.

Not sure having them work in a animal shelter is a good idea.

When I was teenager, the vet gave our old dog who was very sick a shot to put him asleep. The dog was whimpering as he died. It would have been far more humane to have just shot him.

A lot of people (not all certainly) get cranked up about cats or dogs but never think once of visiting someone in a nursing home.

Do you know how many ‘feral’ cats are just strays, lost or dumped? Once out in the wild, most become very afraid and ppl think it’s totally wild. They are dependent on people...ALL OF THEM feral or not. MOST of the ‘so called ‘feral’ cats that I have fed in colonies over the last 20+ yrs turn out friendly..it’s just a matter of trust. They are all now known as COMMUNITY cats (stray, lost, homeless, feral, dumped) because they deserve a life too.

Look. I am an animal lover, to an extent. I like the zoo. I love to hunt. And many animals are delicious whether they are raised in someone's back yard or off the fat of the land. But your idea that cats can't exist in the wild is wrong.

Many farm cats are mean as can be but helpful with rodent control and they get little to no assistance from farmers. Sure they steal slop from the pigs now and then. But they have an appetite for mice and rats. I grew up in a neighborhood on the edge of civilization and we were surrounded by farms and fields. We had feral cats that lived in the storm sewers. They were constantly having kittens and they were pretty aggressive. It was a tight neighborhood and nobody was allowed to feed them. They attacked the neighborhood dogs and would chase small kids. I don't know if they were CRACK kitties or what. But we feared them.

My uncle had a farm with pigs, cows and chickens. There were always 4-8 wild cats living around the farm. My Aunt and Uncle strictly told us to not screw with the cats or the kittens. One of them only had 3 legs. Nobody knows why. Another one was missing an ear, also a mystery. They didn't feed those cats or give them water. But they did have a place in an old grain silo that they would deposit rodent remains.

So I am going to have to disagree with you that all cats are loving, adorable, needy, dependent, helpless pets.

Again, I do not advocate the abuse of any animal for entertainment. And feral cats (along with pythons, lizards, and all other former pets released into the wild) can become nuisance animals or pests. It's usually the fault of bad pet owners. So it's a shame. They should be dispatched humanely in my opinion.

It is widely known that those who are cruel such as this are very much prone to heinous crimes against other people. That being said, I have heard stories of “old timers” who treated animals with zero compassion and that was the norm.

Well, to be fair, connecting them to school shooters is like connecting a casual marijuana user to meth.

Most grown men can tell you about the time they shot a robin or tor the legs off a spider, or any number of things they did to some aninal. Fortunately, most of us learned from it. It would be sad if we were entering a world where every one of us ended up with the grief these poor kids are going to end up with.

BTW, I grew up in King county Washington. It was a common practice to put cats in a burlap bag, tie the top off and go to the Black Diamond bridge over the green river and throw the bag into the river about a hundred yards below. I never did it, but a lot of people did. None of them shot up schools. Not a one. They grew up.

Yep.

Related:
I was amazed at all the stories about female teachers having sex with their male students and how the reverse seemed to no longer be true. I figured male teachers had just figured out that it was just too dangerous. Anyway, I did an internet search for stats, etc.

What I found was interesting. Guys still do it a lot more than girls do. It’s just that when guys do it, it’s a “dog bites man” story and when girls do it its a “man bites dog” story. That is, the former is typical behavior, but the latter is unusual, at least it used to be.

There is nothing special about boys under 20 torturing animals in one way or another. However, GIRLS doing it would be a huge story for me. That would be unusual.

There are humane ways to get rid of feral cats

Like what?

I'd think throwing it in a lake is reasonably humane.

3rd degree felony in Texas that can get them 2-10 years and a $10,000 fine.

There is a very easy way to tell if a cat is feral. Try and pet it. Welders gloves highly recommended.

When someone abuses an animal like that you know that they would have no compunction doing the same or worse to a child or others. These Animals need to removed from society before they blossom into serial killers. Removed from society, one way or..............another.

You want to get rid of that feral cat? Trap it and turn it over to a shelter.

I pushed my cat into the water once when he was drinking out of the toilet

When I was a kid, our dog and cat would go round and round. Was a running gag for years and years.

One weekend, the cat stole the "end" of the whipped cream bowl....it was a couple of spoonfulls, generally split between the pets as a treat for them. One thing led to another, and the cat wound up with the whole thing.

The next day, the cat was sitting on the edge of the tub watching Dad take a bath. No idea why, it's just what the cat occasionally did. Not to let the previous day's slight go unanswered, the dog noticed, walked up, and pushed the cat into the tub. Not sure who yelled louder, the cat, or my father.

We didn't need TV with entertainment that good.

I do recall as a kid hearing that cats always land on their feet and my friends and I did drop cats upside down to test this. They always did land on their feet in our tests.

Disclaimer - No cats were hurt in the exercise of these tests

These are not very young kids. They are teenagers, old enough to have developed some empathy. It is late in the game for them, but if they don’t develop some humanity, they are headed for sad times as it one day will be their turn to grow old and suffer.

Where is he?

Last night I was biking on a trail and was going at a good clip when a jackrabbit jumped out of the bush and doggone it if I didn't end up running right over him with both tyres.... darned near threw me off my bike. Your picture is giving me a somewhat fearful image of what I can expect lining the trail the next time I'm going through that bush....except rabbits instead of a cat.
