The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns & Lynn Novick (vanity)
PBS ^ | 2017 | Ken Burns&Lyn Novick

Posted on 07/14/2018 12:04:36 PM PDT by eastforker

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides—Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations. THE VIETNAM WAR features more than 100 iconic musical recordings from greatest artists of the era and haunting original music from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as well as the Silk Road Ensemble featuring Yo-Yo Ma.

I plan to watch it. Vietnam has been a part of our military history that I avoid. But I loved the WWII documentary he did. It was really good.

Ho Chi Minh was a Comintern agent from the time of the Russian Revolution, and he actually was a founding member of the French Communist Party when he lived in France.

I happen to know my history, have a degree in history.

Please tell me where you found fault in his WWII doc? The stories were told by those who were there.

The Viet Nam War ought to have taught us, among other things, that you can’t win a war if you don’t simultaneously win the propaganda war. We know how the left does propaganda, and street organizing, and even knowing this for the people who get their news from the Alphabet networks, it is very effective.

During Viet Nam there was no alternative conservative media, no Limbaugh, no Fox, nothing but wall to wall peace marches and body counts until the people begged for it to just stop.

That, and as now, a Democrat Party that was in league with the devil.

But I still say, the US didn’t lose the war, South Vietnam did.

Better to say there were no winners.

VC were wiped out. North Vietnamese took heavy losses except for the children of their political elite who were able to go study in Russia and avoid their draft.

LBJ's political career came to a screeching halt after his 64' landslide.

American losses were 1/10th of the Vietnamese. But American families only cared about the 1 that had been drafted just when he was getting his life started.

So can some of our people in command of things. I think the movie depicted the dereliction of our leadership from executive to many of the field commanders.Yes our soldiers did fight bravely, we were lacking in leadership.

The Left really didn’t ramp up the protests of the war until Nixon was in the White House.

Only the most radical protested when LBJ was in office.

Yes, it is on YouTube:

TELEVISION’S VIETNAM and is presented in two parts: The Real Story and The Impact of Media.

Accuracy in Media produced it and Heston does a superb job of narrating it.

That's true. But you have to decide which battles to fight and when and how. Pick the wrong ones at the wrong time and you can end up losing credibility in a big way.

Oh that’s pretty funny!

LOL Thanks.

I’m a fan of a few subjects, most notably horse-racing. Years ago a bunch of the idiots on a racing forum hoped and prayed Burns would do something with racing - and it might be perfect because many early jockeys were black and they were basically shut out c. 1910. I protested because frankly, he’s boring and never mind how bad he would make us all feel for “how bad” racing (stick subject here) “has been to blacks”.

An addendum? Do you really think that Ken Burns would be interested in refuting his own central thesis - i.e., that the whole war was a misbegotten mess?

The truth is that we were in the middle of the Cold War: the communists were pushing "National Liberation Wars" (outside assisted civil wars) and Vietnam was their big test case.

Kennedy decided to ramp up military assistance to see if South Vietnam could beat back the VC and NVA but the Soviet kept ramping up the military support and the NVA kept building up their numbers in the South.

We had only two choices: abandon an ally - who was strategically astride the Straits of Malacca with three major harbors - or to fight.

We fought and we fought well, even though it was a miserable hot, humid place for a war and civilians were all over the place and we had to really concentrate to avoid harming them.

While we were there, the communists started and maintained a campaign to undercut us and get our country to pull out and lose. They camouflaged it as an "antiwar" movement but it was simply a pro-enemy front with more than enough liberals and cowards adding mass to their numbers. Meanwhile, our useless Justice Department did absolutely nothing to expose these people and the traitors who were working with the enemy.

"Bitter" doesn't begin to describe my feelings about what our country did to us. And Ken Burns? An enemy sympathizer.
