Spains Socialist government is seeking to erase gender bias in the constitution but the head of the Royal Spanish Academy, the custodian of the language, on Monday said the plan was unworkable.
Last week, Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo asked the Academy to study updating the 1978 constitution with inclusive language.
We have a constitution in the masculine which dates back to 40 years ago, she said, noting that it referred to ministers and deputies with the male form of the noun.
The traditional Spanish use of male pronouns and noun forms to refer to both genders collectively has raised the hackles of some, who say it makes women invisible.

Hey guys, you are looking over the abyss. Step back, or jump off.
Socialists don’t waste anytime demolishing cultures.
Weaponizing language is one of their favorite means.
They are also accepting refugees that Italy rejected, extending free medical care to illegals and taking down the razor wire that was keeping Africans from climbing the fence keeping them out of Spanish territory. All this in a country with 16% unemployment, the least educated workforce in Western Europe and a staggering amount of debt. At the same time there are massive protests against tourists that bring in much needed cash. Bizarre behavior to say the least.
Its very hard for the left to decide what to do with a language such as Spanish, French, etc where nouns have genders. Strangely enough, feminists in the English speaking world shrieked about the few sex-differentiated terms in English, such as actress or poetess, and got them eliminated. At the same time, Europes feminists were screaming about the fact that traditionally, a term such as judge or mayor (juez or alcalde in Spanish) didnt reflect the sex of the holder, so they demanded the introduction of jueza, or alcaldesa, feminine genders of the titles. (Actually, in Spanish, these terms existed but they were honorary titles for the wife of the mayor or official - LOL.)
In any case, since every noun has a gender in a language with genders, these people are now going nuts trying to remake their very language to reflect their political obsessions.
Spain will be the next country to be destroyed. The public is really stupid, and votes based on emotion. It has no idea of what socialism or freedom actually mean.
This is the beauty of Spanish.
You cant go gender neutral... without destroying the language.
Plus, what is up with "reforming" a language to equally reflect two genders, if there are 5 or 12 or 38 genders, all with their accompanying grammatically-matched adjectives, articles, etc?
The whole system breaks down even with just two.
They want "deaconess" but reject "priestess."
They don't want "male nurse"anywhere, but they do want "trans woman" everywhere.
Waitaminnit. That was yesterday. Today they don't.
Waiter. Waitress. Waitperson. Wait-staff. Waitron.
Tigress.
Euphrates.
You just can’t keep up with them! But that’s because they’re nuts, and we’re not.
The gender purisst are wrong, at least in English, as “guys” has transitioned from meaning just a group of males to meaning a group of people.
However, unfortunately for Spanish, gender is often embbeded in word construction with different word endings specific to gender: as in muchachos for boys and muchachas for girls. There is no direct word for “guys” in Spanish, the translation is the same as for boys, muchachos.
It would take a whole reconstruction of the Spanish language to make it “gender nuetral” everywhere.
Cacajuates. Two nuts in one.
