Used to be that there were no family names, and what is perceived as a last name by us was actually the name of the father, with “son of” either preceding or following that name. Still done that way in Iceland.

In that regard, it’s interesting that “Madison” is a popular name for a girl — technically, it comes from being “Matthew’s son”…

In Việt Nam no one changes his name on marrying. Nguynễ Thị Linh is still Nguyễn Thị Linh and Trần Văn Khanh is still Trần Văn Khanh. The children get the father's surname.
