I forgot to say that when you referenced Ian Gillan singing for Black Sabbath, “Spinal Tap” always comes to mind because of Sabbath’s infamous “Stonehenge” stage props during Gillan’s Tenure with the band.

The YouTube videos of Gillan describing the Stonehenge incident are hilarious.

Another tidbit about “Smoke on the Water” that you may already know.

There are a few videos on YouTube with audio of the infamous Zappa concert and the fire. One video even has a couple of pics of the fire around the stage.

Apparently the “Stupid with a flare gun” was a refugee from Czechoslovakia and he ended up fleeing Switzerland.

The first three albums by Deep Purple are quite different from the others. As you said April is a fine song and I like Shield on the album titled “The Book Of Taliesyn”. The first three are more on the psychedelic side of things being recorded in 1968 and 1969. Rod Evans on vocals and Nick Simper on bass...different style as opposed to Ian Gillian and Roger Glover.

My favorite Deep Purple was the second lineup that had Gillian and Glover. I sort of lost interest after the album titled Who Do We Think We Are, although Burn wasn’t a bad album...just didn’t think David Coverdale was in the same class as Ian Gillian. Gillian’s vocals were perfect for the sound of DP for those albums “In Rock” through “Who Do We Think We Are”.

The classic lineup returned in 1984 for the album “Perfect Strangers”...another fine album with the title track and Knocking At Your Back Door.

Yes, “Machine Head” and “Fireball” are my two best. As you said Fools is a great one but I like No No No slightly more...Gillian’s vocals are astounding!

“Machine Head”...what a great album...Pictures Of Home, Highway Star and Space Trucking!

I think I’m just gonna have to crank up my DP playlist tonight and turn the Logitech speakers UP UP Up!

Hey, I see you’re an AL girl...I’m next door in MS but Orange Beach has been my second home for 30 years now. My folks lived on the beach there since 1985 and I hope in just a few years me and the wife can sell and move down.

Thanks for your comments...stay well and vote Trump!

I think we did too. Bands are manufactured now. Songs are all written by two or three writers. It’s sickening.

“Shield” is a good tune. I have been listening to every album from every DP lineup. I like a lot of the songs from the Evans-Simper era. Shield, April, Help, Hush, Anthem, Blind, Wring That Neck and What About Rosemary are some that come to mind. Evans and Simper were good but they were “Pop” and would have never gotten the band to the next level. IMO, the addition of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover was a genius move which put DP on “Led Zeppelin” level. It’s incredible to think about the ridiculous amount of talent on the second lineup or, as rabid DP fans call them, The Mark II Lineup. Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord were in a class by themselves, Ian Paice was every bit as good as John Bohnam or Keith Moon, Roger Glover was superb and Ian Gillian...I dare say that, in his prime, Gillan was the best Rock vocalist, period. His talent was stunning and came naturally because he had a Grandfather who sang opera and a Mother who possessed musical ability. Gillian’s sister, Pauline, briefly had her own band. If I hadn’t been a newborn back then, I would have been obsessed with Gillan because he wasn’t just talented but incredibly handsome and charismatic. When I watch DP videos on YouTube, I don’t watch just for the music. 😈 “No, No, No” is great and, I agree, Gillan completely “kills” it vocally. “Strange Kind of Woman” is also great. I also like “ Demon’s Eye”, which wasn’t included on the US version of Fireball but the European one. I’m happy to hear someone else who loves “ Pictures of Home”. I believe that it is one of their most underrated songs but I love it. Of course, Highway Star and Space Trucking are epic. I also love “ When a Blind Man Cries” but, from what I understand, it wasn’t included on the original LP because Blackmore hated the song. I have no idea why because, IMO, that song is absolutely beautiful and really shows off Gillan’s bluesy vocals. The DP third lineup with Coverdale and Glenn Hughes was a step down, although I enjoy Coverdale with Whitesnake. I admit that “Burn” was a good album but their next LP, “Stormbringer” was subpar. The only song that stands out on that LP is “Soldier of Fortune”. Of course, “Perfect Strangers” was superb. “Knocking at Your Back Door” contained an epic intro even though that was probably their “naughtiest” song, lol. I also love “ Wasted Sunsets” from that LP. There is something about that song that is so sad. I almost forgot to cite the LP , “In Rock”. Of course “Child in Time” is the standout but “ Flight of the Rat” is sadly underrated and an epic song. I’m jealous that you have a home in Orange Beach. I LOVE the Gulf and would move there in a heartbeat if I could. I live in West Central Alabama near Tuscaloosa. I love being near Tuscaloosa but I REALLY, REALLY love the beach:) To me, it is paradise. I think that I will follow your lead and blast my DP playlist. Extremely loud, of course:) Oh, I almost forgot to tell you that I recently discovered a DP song called “Hallelujah”. It was the very first song from the Gillan-Glover lineup and was their “audition” song. It sounds as if it could be on Gillan’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” LP which, of course, he nailed perfectly. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Rk6VYN31v2U It has been great talking to you and, don’t worry, I’m on the Trump train! Have a great week.

Yikes! Sorry, I don’t know why that happened because I wrote my reply in paragraphs. Sigh.

I’ve got to post once more to clear up any confusion concerning Orange Beach. I reread my comment and can see why...

My parents lived at Orange Beach from the early 1980’s till about ten years ago. The wife and I naturally spent a lot of time down there since my dad was in real estate (buying up condos and reselling them). I do not have a home there at this time but am hoping to in a few years if I can financially handle it...not sure I’ll be able to.

We still go down every year in spring and always in October.

We’ll, I’ll leave you alone now...:>)
