On Thursday, August 9, 2018, a resident of a Lake Tillery development on the western side of Montgomery County went missing while taking her daily walk. After several hours the 66 year old female did not return home. Her husband called neighbors and friends who searched the area. They were unable to locate her and call 911. Sheriffs deputies and search and rescue were sent to the scene. Within hours she was discovered deceased on the side of an unused road within the development. An investigation was conducted with the assistance of the Medical Examiners Office, NC Wildlife Resources Commission and Animal Control. The investigation revealed she had been attacked by dogs. Law enforcement searched the neighborhood and located two pit bull dogs with physical evidence reflecting the dogs involvement.

See my post #80. :-)
That’s interesting. I believe it somewhat mirrors the pit bull population in the US, no? And in turn, that population may well reflect people’s perception of their lack of safety. (Who let’s their kids walk a mile to school, today, as I did when I was a youngster?)
Sad.
The dogs owners are responsible for allowing the dogs out free to do such horrible things, like literally murder a woman.
I read a little of the thread from earlier today but had to go somewhere.
I’m thinking I should marry a black muslim convert to Christianity and that we should own pit bulls just so I can piss off the greatest number of people across all divides and know that most everyone coming up my drive deserves to be ranged prior to introductions...
Not yet.
Thanks for your post now it makes prefect sense that there are more Tigers being kept as pets that there are Tigers in the wild.
“Anyone who owns one should post a 1 million dollar liability bond”
They should also have to be certified to own these jihad dogs and have to put them through training programs - dog AND owner. That would discourage so many morons from owning these dogs, and give incentive to owners to handle them properly. They are weaponized animals. And this crap is happening way too often.
I agree so much. The ignorance of these owners is all fake. They struggle for attention lost in their insignificant so the own a killer dog. Many have been sued but not jailed yet.
All domestic animals were wild animals, originally. ALL of them.
Enough of them are to disqualify the entire breed as appropriate pets in any neighborhood environment.
To be fair, statistics based on fatal attacks may be somewhat misleading. As pointed out by other posters, there are a lot of non-fatal pit bull attacks that result in significant to critical injuries. They are extremely territorial, and likely to do something about it, in my experience. I myself have been bitten on the foot by one, “out of the blue”, over at my next door neighbor’s place, several years ago, while I was having an entirely pleasant conversation with the guy. I’ve also been aggressively snapped at by a German Shephard, and in another incident, chased by a pair of Dobermans (yikes!) while bicycling, many years ago. (Luckily, a semi passed me at just the right moment, cutting off the dogs’ angle of attack. Golly, some things one just does not forget!)
Again to be fair, I’ve had more small dogs threaten me, than large dogs, but, those, if need be, I as an adult human in (still) reasonably good shape can just punt over the sofa, fence, etc... Shoot, sometimes even most any rooster (they can “get” you pretty nastily with those spurs) needs to be shown who is boss...
There are many considerations: What is the media “hype” factor? Is there some sort of implied right to own a dog for protection? Should medium & large breeds with a demonstrated rate of attack or some sort of “risk factor” be licensed at some expensive rate to pay for better animal control efforts, perhaps including inspections? (Can your dog dig under the fence too easily?) And so on...
Your point is?
Domesticated isn’t wild, but is tame.
Wild isn’t domesticated nor tame.
Feral WAS domesticated and isn’t tame.
Humans have associated with wolves/dogs for how long? Some argue as long as 50,000 years or more. How long have they been tame?
Depends. Some breeds have been maintained as semi wild-type for centuries, trained to fight - each other, bulls, humans. The natural instincts to hunt are as much in humans as in dogs, humans tease out those traits, selectively breed for those behaviors and produce some animals that are MUCH closer to wild type than domesticated.
Pit Bulls, I’d argue, are one such breed of dog, very close to wild type, and have no business being outside of caged environments.
Very easily revert to wild, instinctual behavior compared to other dogs, but other dogs can and DO attack when provoked. The provocation to Pits is usually an air molecule moving randomly. OR a kid trying to pet the nice doggy, or a little old lady walking in her neighborhood, alone. Tamed but not domesticated.
True about elephants, tigers, lions - they can be tamed, but never domesticated. At least not in the time periods we’ve been working on/with them.
Cheetahs have been kept as pets for as long as we have records, first dynasty Egyptian frescoes/carvings show them on leads, but they’re not considered fully tame. Weirdly, in the US they’re considered “endangered” but there’s an active breeding population maintained in zoos and in personal ownership (among the rich and entitled) around the world. Wouldn’t active breeding and pet ownership make them NOT endangered? Tame but not fully domesticated.
Basically, everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but no one has a right to aim a shotgun at a crowd with a hair trigger just waiting to be bumped, jostled, “triggered” to randomly wound, maim or kill someone.
That’s how I see Pit Bulls.
I learned evolutionary biology from Drs. Chris Wills and Stanley Miller many decades ago - was a TA for a year for Chris - I’ve got some bona fides but am far from expert in the subject.
JMHO. Not yet fully caffeinated.
At the bare minimum, they should not be allowed out in public without a muzzle. Why were these killer dogs allowed out to wander? The owner of these beasts should be charged with murder.
the pit bull should be outlawed and violators in possession should be jailed. This has done on way too long and must be addressed bu our State legislators or they become complicit. There are no more excuses. This is horrible and happens every day.
Rowrlr.
It’s not that these dogs bite at rates that are out of proportion to the rates of bites of other dogs. It’s that when they DO bite, it’s so often big trouble.
But many big dog breeds pose similar dangers. The larger the dog’s bite, the more diligently it ought to be taught not to bite.
Housecats bug ya?
Well, they can be pretty vicious with sharp claws, something that dogs do not have. But I trim my cats’ claws. People who don’t, either have a very difficult cat or else are lazy. It’s not all that hard.
Maybe the cuteness factor with pits are why owners don’t consider it important to diligently teach them not to bite. Pits are cute, when they are not biting.
Dont mind HOUSE cats a bit.
Just when theyre outside, theyre fair game.
Operation Pussylockdown.
