Caught on camera: Car goes 198 mph on Wake County [NC] highway

WAKE COUNTY, NC (WTVD) -- One hundred ninety-eight miles per hour!

It's how fast a driver in Wake County got up to last month on US-1 near the Triangle Expressway.

William Jefferson, 22, was behind the wheel -- he has since been charged with street racing and reckless driving.

Only on #ABC11 the wild video of a street racing stunt in wake county. If you can believe it, the car got up to 198 MPH! @NCSHP pic.twitter.com/7kL4vBqSju — Josh Chapin (@JoshChapinABC11) August 17, 2018

"It's one reason why I don't want my kids on the roads late at night," said Maryanne McAdams, a mother from Holly Springs. "I don't have a driver yet --we're about a year away but it's that kind of stuff that makes me really nervous."

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said somebody sent them the seven-minute YouTube clip as part of a complaint.

The video shows Jefferson in his Dodge Challenger "Hellcat" driving nearly 130 mph over the speed limit on US-1. In addition, the video shows Jefferson take the car over 100 in a 40 mph zone.

The clip starts with the car doing "doughnuts" in a parking lot before moving to a clip of Jefferson with his hood open at a nearby Sheetz.

"I don't think that road is particularly dangerous but anybody going 198 mph and it's going to be particularly dangerous," McAdams said. "It's really a miracle that nobody was hurt or killed in that."

Jefferson has a clean record except for a few traffic violations.

I wish they’d take that car and put it in the crusher. Total disregard for anybody else on the road.

What’s crazier is the motorcycle chasing him.

I was skeptical of the speed until I looked up that it makes 707 hp. and the costs start at $52,540. So how did William Jefferson come up with the money? He seemed to be driving it like he stole it.

It’s in the very short story: Dodge Challenger Hellcat, 700+ horsepower, $65k.

What’s the penalty for going 130mph OVER the speed limit? Hell, some places if you are maybe 25 mph over the speed limit in say a 40mph area you LOSE YOUR LICENSE. This guy was doing over 100mph in a 40mph zone. How does he NOT lose his license? Should be a felony.

I want to thank the idiot for providing the justice system with such great evidence for his crime.

If you want to go that fast, go to the track. NC has plenty of them.

McAdams said. "It's really a miracle that nobody was hurt or killed in that."

At that speed, no one will get hurt. They will all get killed.
I drove on the Autobahn in Germany. It sometimes got hair raising. I never drove in the left hand lane. I think only a few accidents were injury types. The VAST majority of accidents, were fatal.

Sick!
But if you’re already paying for that kinda ride, shell out the pocket change to hit the track... It’s safer and... Legal...

>>NC has plenty of them.

Does it? Still?

NE Florida used to have lots of drag strips, but now they are all gone except one. Noise complaints took them all down. The remaining one is so crowded that you might get to make 2 passes in a day. But now we need them more than ever since even 4 door sedans have 250+ HP and ride so well that even an idiot feels safe doing 100+ mph.

These new Dodges are scary. The hellcat challenger and charger both go as fast as the first Vector W8. 200mph. I took my sportbike to 160 once and all of reality changed - I experienced time dilation. It was crazy. I can’t tell you enough about these speeds.

But I’m also an olde-timey street racer (Where we would top out at 120.. if) and I think it’s odd, still, that a black kid would do this.

Black guys rarely care about the speed of their car.

Kinda reminds me of “Thunder Road”, but without the moonshine. I did 110+? on the A Bahn, but slowed after I did it. It was too scary in a 140 MB.

As a kid I “Took it to the track” and immediately got cock-blocked by my lack of about $25,000 in “Regulation” modifications to my car that were required to play.

So I went back to the rural backroads of New England.

These tracks do exist, sure but they aren’t the same at all.

It’s like saying that you really, really want to do a Hogan’s Alley but your friends say “Just go to the range”. It’s not the same and the range has an RSO eyeballing you constantly and then tapping on your shoulder every minute to offer his opinion.

Feh. Sanctioning takes it too far.
