A couple of years ago, my alma mater played in the Quick Lane Bowl. We stayed out at the airport but as part of the charter. They drove us around downtown Detroit pointing out places like Cobo Arena, the Fox Theatre, etc.

I found myself thinking “Hey, this isn’t so bad looking here. It’s definitely an older looking downtown but it’s not that bad. It looks like they’re trying to clean it up”.

My younger brother told me years ago that he turned down a job offer in Chicago that would have doubled his salary. He was an attorney in San Diego at the time.

When I asked him why he would turn down so much money, he replied, "Because I would have had to live in Chicago."

I always thought Stockton was fairly nice, as California cities went. There certainly are ones that are a lot worse.

It appears the main criteria for this list has to do with crimes. They seem to have used a pretty simplistic approach to picking the cities.
