The Eagles pass Michael Jackson for the best-selling album of all time

The Eagles have flown past Michael Jackson’s Thriller to take the record for the best-selling album of all time.

Recording Industry Association of America confirmed to the Associated Press on Monday that the band’s 1976 compilation album, Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975), has been certified 38x platinum, which means sales and streams of the album have reached 38 million copies. That officially puts it ahead of Thriller, which has been certified 33x platinum.

That’s not even the limit of the Eagles’ record-selling dominance. In addition to grabbing the No. 1 spot, the band also has the third-best-selling album of all time: 1977’s Hotel California, which is now 26x platinum.

“We are grateful for our families, our management, our crew, the people at radio and, most of all, the loyal fans who have stuck with us through the ups and downs of 46 years. It’s been quite a ride,” Don Henley said in a statement.

I have 2000 rock songs on my ipod and only 1 of them is by the Eagles. Hotel California. Does it count when they were the Stone Poneys, backing up Linda Ronstadt?

My Mom loved The Eagles. After my Dad got too old to drive, I’d drive them down to Savannah to visit her brother’s grave (he was a pastor in Savannah Beach and Statesboro) or we’d make trips down to Norfolk to see my brother. We’d pop a few Eagles CDs in the player along the way.

Speaking of “Hotel California”, it’s a rip-off of this song...

The music business in America is controlled by communists. Music that is promoted is dissonant and not melodic.

It’s all in the communist manifesto. Ugly, foul “art,” music with no imagination or interesting hook. Tom Petty called out the music industry and it got his last 8 or 10 albums banned from radio.

I actually called a radio station to request a song of Petty’s that was really good but not one of his classics like American Girl and the DJ said they weren’t allowed to play it. Petty’s album The Last DJ is about this exact subject. And it’s very good with 3 or 4 songs that could have been huge hits. RIP TP.

As far as I know, this is the only song by the Eagles that was covered by Elvis Presley

Trying to Get to You--The Eagles' version

Of course, the Eagles were a band formed and based in California. Which once again proves California has the very best and the worst of everything.☺ So there ya have it!

“I can identify over 100 music artists in the 60’s and 70’s that had superb albums. I can’t name one from the 90’s. “

As a musical child of the 70’s the 80’s was a sonic wasteland that thankfully was erased by bands of the 90’s.

There were a lot of good tunes made in the 90’s but the concept of an album never seemed to rebound from what it had been a couple of decades earlier.

There are no good albums today. The stuff on the radio is horrible. But the indie bands to be found on the internet are worth searching for.

Hotel California is number III

Eagles are two of top three spots

However....

Let me really piss you off.....modern artists like Rihanna and Eminem and Ariana Grande are measure equally for downloads as album sales were 30-50 years ago

Which is bullshit since a 7 dollar album in 1971 would be 44 dollars today

Do these hood rats and suburban wannabes spend 44 bucks for 6-8 songs

No they or their parents or auntie pay 9 bucks a month to Apple or Napster is how

Comparing modern sales to actual album sales is ridiculous

On Eagles......Frey and Henley ....both libs...both stingy

The only contemporary music that is listenable is movie music.

Bleach - Nirvana
Pearl Jam had at least two
NIN had a pretty good one

There were a few good bands in the 90s. Grunge was a big deal and their music has held up pretty well.

I have the entire Desperado album on my Ipod.

It was one of the first albums I bought when I got my turntable. I had to hook it up to my 8 track amplifier and speakers.

I was a kid when Different Drum came out. I was impressed with Linda’s vocals and still like her music even if I don’t agree with her politics.

Disintegration by The Cure. 1989.
A great album for Mood Rock. Not from the actual 1990’s, but very close.
