An Ohio officer shot his police dog after it attacked him, leaving him with serious bite wounds, the Columbus Police Department said.
Officer Brian Carter underwent surgery at a hospital and K9 Benzi, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, was humanely euthanized.
Carter was correcting Benzis behavior through verbal commands at the departments K9 office Saturday morning when the dog suddenly turned on him, a Columbus Police spokesperson said in a news release.

Hope hes charged with shooting an officer.
Well, the cop got to go home safe, the dog, not so much.
Ouch :)
Just wondering- Are police/military service dogs neutered normally? And are they always males? (I can see where females might be useful for searching or other non-conflict duties.)
“Belgian Malinois
Close cousin of GS - same traits though.”
Our German shepherd rescue occasionally gets Belgian Malinois as owner turn-ins or come from the shelter.
As noted in other posts, they can a handful. Our last five: three are doing great as pets with very experienced owners, one is still with the rescue as a foster dog due to fear issues, and the fifth is working as a Memphis Police drug detection dog. He had to be turned over to a Belgian Malinois sanctuary to correct some aggression issues before moving to the Memphis Police.
Had a short-lived part time job as a kid picking up my neighbor's German Shepherd crap. Grossed me out after a few times, she/he was a big dog.
Nice looking dogs.....
Go to the original article and look at photo of officer and his k9. To me the dog doesn’t look happy or could be unwell or in pain or maybe he’s pissed off and has had enough from look in his eyes. There’s something in his stance and the look in his eyes that’s not right.
Thank you very much!
Those are my babies <3
That photo was taken in the football field of a school near my house. The grass needs to be cut very badly there, not sure what’s going on with there grounds keeping contract. The tall grass makes for a good picture though.
My home is 3/4 of an acre with a good size back yard, but I have to say these girls are some pooping machines. Both of them 3-4 times a day. I also clean up after them at the field or on the way to the field, because I don’t want anyone stepping in any mess. I have a lot of doody duty!
Theres something in his stance and the look in his eyes thats not right.
The dog is actually leaning away from the handler with his front legs close together as if ready to evade . Also notice the position of the ears. The dog is afraid. Evidence of physical abuse?
Good thing the dog wasn’t black.
I don’t think it made any difference with this particular dog: He must have been unstable.
Another source says this dog was the second one for K-9 officer & officer had been in the unit since 2008:
>> through verbal commands... the dog suddenly turned on him
WTF did he say, “bite me!”
Weird situation. A video would be helpful.
Chuckle.
Does anyone read the damned article
The Malnois attacked him
Pure unsubstantiated speculation Sue
Exactly
If it was theyd be having dog killing orgasms here by the score
Not much more loved here than celebrating shooting a pitbull
Correcting his behavior with verbal commands? Or with something a little more intense?
