BB II

Posted on 09/03/2018 3:11:10 PM PDT by Bell Bouy II

Need sources to the correct version of the Forrestal incident I know there are many floating around many total BS.

Many here have links to the correct version. I remember seeing videos or "films" back then in school at NAS Jax on the fire but cant recall how they portrayed it

Need the real story.

Him dropping bombs on the flight deck I believe are BS.

Thanks

‘Disgraceful’ doesn’t even begin to cover all of that.
And yet the bastard’s carcass gets a temporary parking spot in the Capitol, and the enemedia can’t seem to get enough of kissing his smarmy dead ass.
And so it goes.

Thanks very much for your posts.

I suspect that you have no idea what you are talking about. Please enlighten me.

The reporter who evacuated McCain from the Forrestal was R. W. Apple, of the New York Slimes.

From a March 2000 article, R.W. Apple Keeps a Safe Distance From His Old Buddy, John McCain:

The friendship between Mr. McCain and Mr. Apple goes back to the Vietnam War. The two met in late summer of 1967 when Mr. Apple, then a young star in editor Abe Rosenthal’s newsroom, was a covering a fire on the U.S.S. Forrestal that killed 134 sailors. One of the young Navy pilots aboard the aircraft carrier was Mr. McCain.

Mr. McCain writes of their meeting in his biography Faith of My Fathers : “A distraction from my despondency appeared on the way to Subic in the person of R.W. (Johnny) Apple, the Times correspondent in Saigon. Serving as a pool reporter, he arrived by helicopter with a camera crew to examine the damaged ship and interview the survivors. When he finished collecting material for his report, he offered to take me back to Saigon with him for the daily press briefing irreverently referred to as the `Five O’Clock Follies.’ Seeing it as an opportunity for some welcome R&R, I jumped at the invitation. I passed a few days there pleasantly, wondering about my future and beginning a lifelong friendship with Johnny.”

That is interesting. I knew he left the ship almost immediately, but assumed it was favorable treatment due to the status of his father and grandfather.

...including McCain who escaped uninjured...

That is not correct. You have no idea what you are talking about. Please stop posting things that are easily disproven.

Only part of the bogus stories I know is BS is the bomb dropping thing. You cannot do that by yourself. There is an interlock in the landing gear to prevent anything like that even if you wanted to. How it was on the F-4 and I cannot see any reason the A-4 would be set up differently.

IF someone manually closed the switch, it might be possible to drop the bombs on the deck. No can do from the cockpit.

That is one thing that makes sense. Navy pilots are probably told to get to a safe place and out of the way while fire crews do their thing with the appropriate gear on.

Also; the military invests millions to train pilots. The last they want to do is lose one fighting a fire they have others there to do. It’s to protect their investment I would guess. The sad fact is enlisted personnel are not worth as much as an officer from a military perspective. It has always been this way.

But I would bet good money McCain was told privately at the highest levels that he would NEVER be buried in Arlington

As a former POW and a Purple Heart recipient, McCain had every right to be buried at Arlington. No one would ever have denied him that right.

After the accident, the Air Wing was disembarked at various ports. The Forrestal went into a 9 month repair and refit, the air crew was sent elsewhere. In the case of McCain, he was reassigned to the USS Oriskany where he continued to fly combat missions until he was shot down and was captured. Did he spent some Liberty with a Reporter? Maybe. Was drinking involved? Unless he was crazy.

I have no use for McCain’s political career, especially after his run for the President. And I think that he was dirty in the Keating five scandal, but the nonsense about his combat record is just not supported by the facts.

I’d like to know about the combat records of the posters on this thread.

Are his military records still not released? Man, would I love to see Trump quietly let them out.

Why would they be anyone business? The records aren't for publication, and there wouldn't be jack in them, 40 yrs to scrub them.

Give me break. That’s why the OP is seeking factual info, based on all the ignorant crap floating around out there.

Read up: McCain’s jet was pointed inboard. (comment 31)

That should put it to rest once & for all.

There were two safeguards designed to prevent accidental missile firings: a pin, which, when inserted, physically broke the firing circuit, and there was the pigtail, which connected the firing circuit to the missile pod. Until the plane was on the catapult ready to take off, the pin was supposed to be inserted, and the pigtail left disconnected. Once the plane was on the catapult, an accidentally launched missile would have zoomed down the deck and crashed into the sea harmlessly.

This is correct, other than I find the wind pulling the pin out hard to believe. You had to depress a plunger to pull the pin.

On land this is how we armed rocket pods. Sat at the end of the runway more than a few times plugging in connectors and pulling pins. The drill was to exit under the plane and show the pilot a handful of pins. Same pin pulling for bomb racks.

Poor safety procedures and a safety pin that was known to pull out due to wind on the ribbon.

These are facts. I’m not saying that McCain wasn’t a fkcup, but without regard to his bombs, the incident was not his fault and the bombs were hardly a contributing factor: They would have cooked off on the wing regardless, with the flames fanned by 35 knot winds...without which we wouldn’t be having this discussion (McCain would likely have died in the inferno).

The accident was a coalescing of impossible odds due to one bad decision on top of another, including old/leaking, thin-skinned munitions, unsecure safety pins on the Zuni rocket pods and procedures modified to fully-arm the rockets while the aircraft were still aft and pointed inboard at each other.

There were other contributing factors, but it is still unbelievable to me that McDonnell Douglas had no idea that there was transient current during switchover from external to internal power on a Phantom.

An accident was inevitable. Unfortunately rather than being pointed over the bow on the catapult, the F4 was pointed at a Skyhawk.

A hellstorm from that point was a foregone conclusion.

You want blame, I blame the weapons officers who capitulated to the pilots to violate safety procedures.

Never should have happened. The officer who approved the change should have been hung out to dry, and it certainly wasn’t pilot John McCain.

Adm. Chuck Larson and John McCain were close buds at the Naval Academy.
It was their plan to be buried close to each other at the at the U.S. Naval
Academy Cemetery.

I guess people can speculate if that is the truth.
