A mysterious square aircraft hovering in night sky 'scared me to death,' NC man says

Javion Hill, 35, of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, says he took several photos of the object during a storm on the night of Aug. 18, as he drove on U.S. 74 southwest of Charlotte.

The images feature something square hovering above the treeline, with its edges fringed in lights....

"I was on my way home with my wife on the speaker phone, and it looked like there was a tornado coming, so I was trying to take a picture of the clouds for my wife...But then I saw something that wasn't normal and I was, like: 'Oh my god, what is that?'..."

Hill says he pulled over at the next exit to try and get video, but the aircraft had vanished. A heavy rain followed instantly, he said.

North Carolina is in the top 10 among the 50 states when it comes to alleged UFO sightings, according to the National UFO Reporting Center in Davenport in Washington state.

The state has had 7,570 reported UFO sightings since 1940...

Hill says it's possible what he saw was a military craft. Conspiracy theorists maintain many UFO sightings in the region are actually an experimental military spacecraft known as the TR-3B, an anti-gravity craft that hovers....

Well, there is obviously a lighted building on the left side of the picture. The square of light is a reflection on the windshield from the neon lights around the top, of whatever that building is. It looks like a toll plaza but may just be a convenience store for all I know

I agree on Gas/convenience store.

If it’s just reflected light then why aren’t the white roof supports seen also ?

Most of the explanations posited here are more unbelievable than what is being reported.

I remember now! The alien was in the freezer - the bigfoot was shot and buried by a man who was afraid he might be accused of murder and wouldn’t identify himself or his location.

The shot-and-buried story was a little more believable ;-)

Looks like it’s right above a highway and Hess gas station. Did anyone else see it?

Where were you? Sounds a little like it could have been a fata morgana.

“southwest of Charlotte”

Charlotte-Douglas (CLT) is on the west side of town.

Aircraft was just lining up for the approach end of the active runway...

“Where were you? Sounds a little like it could have been a fata morgana.”

That is very interesting. I was standing midway on V street SW DC between 1st and 2nd street SW (aka Buzzards Point) but the object was over my left shoulder perhaps to what appeared to be 5 miles away over Alexandra Va, in the flats of Anacostia or further up. The target angle was around 45° perhaps 55°... it was 15 to 18 years ago.

Well, I guess they can appear anywhere the right kind of temperature inversion sets up; but they seem to happen most in particular regions...

I love Bigfoot stories. Having heard enough from otherwise reliable people I think they might be. (The panda bear was considered a mythical mountain person until “science” discovered it in the 1800’s iirc).

I think all of the old Coast-to-Coast episodes are on youtube. I’ll try to find that.

There is at least one, perhaps several counties in the State of Washington that have laws on the books that make killing a Bigfoot illegal. I’m guessing mostly as a novelty for the tourists?

I had a Fish & Wildlife guy that would work with me part-time. One time he went down to southern Washington with some wildlife biologist with the University to check on some hair samples on a fence. The lady said a bigfoot went across her farm field and stepped over the barbed-wire fence and there was hair on the fence.

So these two guys drove 2.5 hours one way to get a hair sample and then run some tests on it. Of course my guy never knew anything more about how the tests came out. Seems like a lot of effort to satisfy some lady that is seeing things. Or - perhaps it was a bear on it’s hind legs, or my guy just didn’t want to show up to work that day and gave me a wild excuse!

Interesting. There is the true story of Teddy out on his ranch and three guys stole something. Either some cows or a boat? Anyways, Teddy tells his workers to keep working and he goes after the thieves.

Three days later he walks them into town to the sheriff. He found them way out in the woods and it took him two(?) days to bring them back. (It may have been much longer?) The sheriff wondered why he didn’t just kill them to save the trouble!

In order to stay awake while he watched the prisoners he read aloud from a book he had along. He quipped that the prisoners were probably glad to be in jail, as now they didn’t have to listen to him read all night long!

So, he had a gun trained on them all that time? I can’t imagine anybody wrangling three other guys for that long ;-)

https://www.nps.gov/thro/learn/historyculture/roosevelt-pursues-boat-thieves.htm

Above is the detailed story. It looks like I have some of the details wrong. Or - I read another version of it. He and two guys went after them and caught them. They were out for quite awhile. At one point waiting 9 days for the ice to clear from the river. (The guys were boat thieves).

Teddy had a shotgun to watch over the guys. Towards the end his two partners leave as they are running out of supplies. Teddy walks the guys in and spent 36 hours without sleep. At one point a wagon comes along, and the prisoners are in the wagon with Teddy walking behind and taking them into town.

The 1952 DC flap is my favorite, because it happened in my hometown just over a year before I was born.

I really like the passage from O’Connell’s book about Hynek, where he quotes an air-traffic controller named Harry Barnes. Barnes worked at what was then Washington National Airport and is quoted as saying, “The only recognizable behavior pattern which occurred to me from watching the pips [radar returns] was that they acted like a bunch of small kids out playing. It was helter-skelter, as if directed by some innate curiosity. At times they moved as a group or cluster. Other times as individuals over widely scattered areas.”

From the nets. I can’t find an article where it said he read it aloud and thus tormenting his prisoners, but I’m thinking I did recall that properly. I think reading a book to oneself would only make you sleepy.

************

Since he was the only member of his party left, Roosevelt didn’t sleep for the duration of the almost 40 hour journey across partially frozen, occasionally “ankle deep”, sludge, reportedly keeping himself awake at night by reading Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina while still pointing a shotgun at his prisoners so they couldn’t sneak away or kill him and then be happily on their way.

What makes this more impressive is that none of the prisoners were cuffed or bound in anyway during their transport. You see, the weather was so cold that Roosevelt was worried they would succumb to frostbite if he tied them up at night, so he simply decided to keep ever vigilant while escorting the three prisoners, who were no doubt looking for any opportunity to overpower their lone captor, the last stretch of the journey.
