I reviewed threads from the very first FR report (http://www.freeRepublic.com/focus/fr/520255/posts) through thread number 520326. Feel free to add other significant threads, including photo archives. Bumping this thread periodically instead of the original threads will also avoid scaring people with the headlines.
Bookmark this thread, and bump it from time to time when the nation and the press seems to forget why we need resolve in the face of evil. Forgive some of the early misinformation and broken photo links, and recall the horror and fury.

Note that in comment 8, at 6:09:58, four minutes after the second plane hit [in the fourth thread “SECOND PLANE FLIES INTO OTHER TOWER!”] Catspaw was already calling “Osama bin Ladin.” If I remember correctly, someone else may have said the same even earlier in another thread. There is a lot of expertise on FR.

The officials shut down the bridges and tunnels so I couldn't take the bus back home. I hitched a ride with a colleague who drove in...we drove north through the Bronx and took the Tappan Zee Bridge back to NJ. As we drove over the bridge and looked back toward Manhattan, we saw a formation of what appeared to be F-14s flying toward the City. Manhattan looked like a cloud was emanating from its depths, and with the F-14s flying overhead it looked like a monster movie. Truly horrible.
A few months later when you could get a close look, I walked to see "the Pit." What struck me was the looks on the faces of EVERYONE walking back from the former WTC site: mostly people had incredible sorrow in their eyes and tears streaming down their faces, while a few looked just dazed. And then...there were those who had this look of anger I'll never forget. Not just your average anger. I mean ANGER, sometimes mixed with resolve. It didn't matter if the person I saw was black or white or whatever, in a suit or rags, EVERYONE waking back was moved.
It doesn't matter where I am or the DoodleBob family members are each anniversary. We always remember. Requiescat in pace

Great description. A day of horror and destruction. I know a lot of Americans were as far from Manhattan as you can get, so didn’t see with our own eyes live, smell the smells, have family members killed, etc, but we were “hit” like never before. I was shaking and ill all day. It was my country too, and we all felt that way. I never felt that way before, or since. I’d like to never feel like that again.

These are historic threads. The story is told with the rawness of our conversations. I read through these every year for a more in-depth reminder. I was in NYC two weeks later. There was still smoke and the smell was horrifying. An attack like this will happen again.
I learned of the 9/11 attack here on FR. I was having my morning coffee while checking out the morning news like I always do.
