WASHINGTON – The House has passed legislation that would outlaw the slaughter of dogs and cats for food – a practice that, although rare, is still legal in 44 states.

The bipartisan bill by Florida Reps. Vern Buchanan, a Republican; and Alcee Hastings, a Democrat; would amend the federal Animal Welfare Act to ban the slaughter of dogs and cats for human consumption in the United States. It was passed Wednesday by voice vote.

The bill makes it illegal to knowingly slaughter, transport, possess, buy, sell or donate dogs or cats or their parts for human consumption. Violators would be fined up to $5,000.

Been that way, sadly, for a very long time.

Good one. Carson had a great sense of humor and didn’t mind having the joke played on him!

While in college, friends and I tried to create a machine that would translate dog barks.

When we thought we had it working, we got one of our dogs worked up and excited to get dinner such that it would bark a lot for the machine.

Over and over it came out - “Purina is house pet!”

No it isn’t. Congress has no authority on this issue, and what do you do when you HAVE to eat your animal to survive?

Well, that’s a relief. Certainly more comforting than protecting our borders and jailing 20,000 MS13 gang members.

They’re totally off the reservation. They don’t even bother making a pretense of sticking to stuff where they have Constitutional jurisdiction. If this needs regulating, it’s obviously a state matter, and evidently the state electorates aren’t all that worried about it, or it would already be illegal in a lot more states than it is.

Pass another law requiring everyone in Dearborn, MI to own a black dog.

I’m stunned to find it was legal anywhere.

Same here. I didn’t think it was legal anywhere, and it certainly should not have been legal anywhere, but priorities. The Iranians are still developing nucs. The muzzies are killing people everywhere, and the South Yorkshire (UK) police (and others) are arresting people for thought crimes.

Next, birds and other animals will be banned from being eaten. Unfortunately, there are pet pigs and pet cattle.

This is a large jump toward banning more commonly eaten animals and animals also seldom eaten (snake, alligator, etc.).

We should not ascribe rights or special protections to animals that can be pets, period. I believe beef is still available in India, so we are trying to “out India” India?

Yup, your analysid nailed it.
At best it’s rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
More likely a darker reason to further errode dwindling fascade of Constitutional law-making.

RE: “So this bill is an unthinking attempt to unconstitutionally expand the already unconstitutionally big federal government’s powers imo.
Corrections, insights welcome.”
