Wimberley ISD will debut new stadium lights Friday night that emit less ambient light as part of the city's commitment to keeping the skies dark at night. Wimberley was designated as an International Dark Sky Community earlier this summer, meaning light pollution doesn't obscure views of the night sky. As part of that ongoing commitment, voters in May approved a bond package for the school district that included money for the new lights... The district finished installing them before the school year, and Friday marks the first varsity home game in which they'll be used. Funds to replace them, totaling about $300,000, were allocated through a May bond election voters in Wimberley approved.

It's high school football in Texas.
Playing in the daytime is for the Freshman squad.
Just use a lighted foot ball, and uniforms.
It’s Wimberley, if they played football in the daytime in August or September, kids would die.
Up until a week or so, we had 50 days of over 100 degrees.
Oh, please. They’ve had much longer two a days practice in the middle of 100+ degree days for eons.
And kids have died.
As if night time temps dropped much. Move the games to the middle of Feb.
The post is about tax dollars on lights, not the temperature. Stay on topic.
Can’t obscure the night sky for two hours to play a football game, eh?
More people have died in their beds while asleep or in their showers than on a football field. Ban beds and evil showers!
I have a 10-inch telescope, well, we have several. Light pollution is a big issue.
Just turning off unnecessary lights would help a lot and also save lots of money as well.
My dad played in the 40s, the lighting on the field wasn’t all that advanced so using white footballs was very common.
> Cant obscure the night sky for two hours to play a football game, eh?
What about the people who don’t go to the game, don’t care about the game, don’t even want to hear about the game?
Football isn’t the center of the universe. Texas excepted.
players will be injure if they cant see. What the?
That would be pretty awesome- Glow-in-the-dark football, uniforms, field yard lines, goal posts, etc...
I would love to see that!
Now selling ROCKS as "dark sky-friendly" lights......
If anyone has been on Highway 10 going towards Odessa, you can see the night sky without any light pollution. The sky is beautiful.
If the lights were on every night, 365 days a year, I could see the point. But honestly, it’s two hours a week during high-school football season, which is, what, 9 or 10 weeks?
Come see the North Bumff Peckerwoods come out
and continue their winning streak on the game grid!
It would be interesting if they had individual sensors
on their helmets, coaches could glean a lot of info from
But yeah, lines, posts, line men, officials, players all
lit by different LED lights. I think, we’ve come up with
Maybe nude womens night football league.
The side lines could be made of troughs of jello.
