Camels are basically nasty creatures which require nasty handlers and, yeah, they do have that haughty cultural trait in common.

I beleive it was the King of Morrocco who sent camels as a gift to America when we were fighting the Apache (a cousin tribe to the Navajo who weren't then ready to take up sheep ranching) back in the 1880s.

Long story short is that their handlers weren't very successful in passing on their handling skills to the U.S. Cavalry and feral descendents of those original camels still roam parts of the desert southwest today.

Actually the Camel Corps was a great success. They went without water, ate scrub, hauled heavy loads and scared off the Indians.
It was considered a failure only because it was the brainchild of then Secretary of War, JEFFERSON DAVIS, soon to be President of the CSA.

Now, we can’t have that, can we!
