WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD SEPT. 30, 2018
freerepublic | SEPT. 30, 2018 | greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

Greetings from Mo. It's been chilly nights, cool mornings, and moderate afternoons this week. Due to a combination of Dr. Appts. and Tests along with computer not working, I missed posting on a couple of Fridays. Apologies.

Going forward, if anyone else wants to start the thread on Friday-go ahead-the ping list is on my profile page.

Hubby harvested some carrots, peppers, a few tomatoes and finished digging the potatoes. He's almost finished with the front yard landscaping, just needs to plant something there and put the birdbath in the center.

He is in the finale stage of putting up a Garden shed to store many things including the chipper, generator and garden tools. That should leave plenty of time for planting the winter rye, wheat, and vetch, as well as garden and yard cleanup.

I'll be dehydrating carrots, peppers, and cherry tomatoes later today. It's cool enough to can some beef that is on sale this week. In addition I'll be restocking the pantry and reviewing preps for emergencies, which I didn't get to this month.

I also have to do some taxes and investments/required distributions from IRAs. The withdrawals will be reinvested in Am. Silver Eagles.

Hope all is well with you. Prayers up for all. God Bless.

We are cooler here than normal. I think frost will come on time or maybe early this year. Sometimes winter starts for real close to Thanksgiving, but sometimes it waits till Christmas.

Can people who make their own compost explain their process?

Also, has anyone used ammonia as a fertilizer or add to their compost to accelerate composting?

I started canning this year. I finally got the nerve to do it. I don’t know what I was so afraid of. I canned a roast and a beef dish, a variety of dry beans, some corn, green beans, peach preserves, blueberry jam and corncob jam.

It’s a lot of work but once you get started and get into a routine, it’s not difficult or intimidating at all.

I really want to get somewhere where I can have a real garden that I am able to can out of and not just the perimeter of my little urban backyard.

My Jalapeno peppers have gone really well. I slice them, remove the seeds for planting next year and put them on a frozen pizza before baking. Thin slices. Taste great.

Gave some to a friend in Oklahoma. He had them with hamburger and beans but left the seeds in. He told me they were really hot. I let them mature until bright or dark red.

Did better with Sweet Snacking Peppers this year. Already harvested a dozen or more (5 of those still on the vine with more behind them). I’ve been letting them get to a good orange color.

And the Hatch Peppers have finally been successful. Some good red and green ones already harvested. I’ve picked maybe 60+ cherry but mostly very small Sweet Million tomatoes. Some frozen for later cooking. Some have gone into spaghetti with canned sauces. There’s about a dozen-plus out there still going. Maybe 2 dozen.

We have 2 half acre lots, so are blessed to have a lot of space. Even so, I like freezing or dehydrating of the produce.

The best thing I like about canning is the meats - beef and chicken mostly. That’s the best fast food around. And if the electric goes off, it’s still edible straight from the jar!.
So economical to buy up 15 or 20 lbs on sale and process.

My sweet millions are still going strong too. I need to bury a few branches in a pot of dirt to get a start to bring indoors.

I want to grow a pepper, tomato, and spinach indoors this winter.
