Outside the atmosphere, it's "Near Earth Object".

Inside the atmosphere, but above the ground, it's a "Meteor".

On the ground, it's a "Meteorite".

Technically, that big hole in the ground in Arizona should be called "Meteorite Crater".

But now he has to pay taxes on it. Meteorites are taxed at 99% of face value, and there is a 50% penalty tax for late filing, and then there is interest on the late tax.... So, he’s gonna keep about $50 bucks.

He shoulda just thrown it back up there.

“Why can’t I ever find a rock worth $100,000?”

Speaking of money to burn, I seem to recall during the 80’s when Japan’s economy was booming, some wealthy were paying such numbers for super large boulders for their yards and importing them from around the world. It was a fad and looked at as a kind of status symbol to have the largest or most uniquely-shaped rocks.

I think that was the 0bama IRS interpretation.
That went out the window with the TRUMP tax change.

I’ve spent many summers on the shores of Michigan Lakes searching for rocks. Michigan has very interesting rocks, many fossils, and beautiful smooth colorful beach glass that people collect and display.wonderful vacation destination.

It looks like lava with the little popped bubbles. But unlike pumice, it’s heavy as hell. Probably magnetic as well.

Those are the tell-tale signs. Iron doesn’t get that hot in our world.

And lord knows what the import tariff is on the thing!

I worked with a guy that claimed his dad’s place had a 4-foot diameter meteorite that was dug up in the excavation and then used as a decoration. Dad was selling the house, and the guy was trying to figure out how to move the meteorite.

I doubt it was true - but I told him to just sell it to the highest bidder and let them move it. It would probably be worth a million. And get some friends to stand guard for a week.

Yeah, and I've got a purported meteorite that would make a good doorstop, but this story is about someone else. :^).
