Once more with feeling: Windows 10 October 2018 Update inches closer to relaunch (Insider)

Second Insider build with more fixes for 1809. Could third time be the charm?

Microsoft’s efforts to recover from the Windows 10 October 2018 Update debacle continued last night as a fresh build of the troubled operating system was emitted to Windows Insiders.

Build 17763.104 is the second release of the update to Insiders since the file-eating monster was unleashed on an unsuspecting public back on 2 October before being yanked back into its kennel.

Microsoft reckoned it had fixed all the data loss issues in build 17763.17, which was released just over a week ago but clearly there was still some work left to do. The new build fixes issues with the Task Manager, which was inexplicably originally shipped in a slightly broken form, along with dealing with IME problems in Edge and unresponsive apps following resuming from Connected Standby.

Third party antivirus and virtualisation products also get some love, with compatibility fixes for both.

Additionally, Microsoft reckons it has “fixed several issues with driver compatibility” which will be a comfort to those with blue-screening HP computers and silent Intel-driven audio.

The release was sent to the Slow and Release Preview rings simultaneously because, well, there’s no easy way to get it onto the Fast Ring any more, following the decision to immediately shunt all those Insiders onto the path to 2019. A choice which, in hindsight, was a tad premature.

Microsoft has remained schtum on when the public will once again be able to enjoy the delights of 1809. It is, however, clear that the Windows giant has taken some time to polish away some of the rough edges of the original release (while also shovelling copious amounts of filler into the gaping file-deletion hole.)

Whatever the date when the thing is finally pushed out of the door, we expect the release to be a tad more cautious than the giant trifle flung at a wall of last time. ®

This is for the benefit of "Windows Insiders" (such as myself) who are the ones who get these pre-public builds. Let's do the due diligence!

Windows 10 is the biggest piece of shit OS I have ever seen - constant updates are driving me crazy. If I don't work with a computer for two weeks the next time I start it up it's useless for about 30 minutes updating the OS.

I would not piss in Bill Gates' mouth even if he was dying of thirst.

there’s only two ways to run W10 as a stable operating system:

1.) Run ANY OS EXCEPT W10 ...

2. Run W10 with wuauserv disabled and never update a W10 anything ever again ...

This is also pretty much how i run all W7, with the exception that I do a (nearly) complete update via wsusoffline on new systems and THEN disable wuauserv permanently ...

Yep! absolutely! Just do it and never look back!

Why anyone would continue to abuse themselves with MS I have no clue... I have the Cinnamon edition and it is flawless so far and simply operates just like win 7 but with even better features.

Used Rufus to build a USB stick and then clicked install after booting the stick. Done deal... The auto install alongside windows went flawlessly.

I find W7 restricted to a VM to be “healthy”.

Pretty bad when you still have to “isolate” it. :)

On a 6 week old hp laptop running w10, i just lost my wifi device and with it all my internet connectivity by walking away from the laptop for 7 hours... Predictably, windows diagnostics is useless. Since it is under warranty im thinking to return it to costco. Maybe get a mac this time finally.

I’ve only become a true evangelist after configuring SSDs on Linux Mint 19.

I had trouble before, but now I’m all Good and off and running.

Oracle VirtualBox and underlying VMs pretty much solve all issues.

On my ASUS Zenbook, I received & installed 1809 with ZERO problems.

Ditto recent update, too.

I just set up VirtualBox and going to load a copy of same then clone it again in the VB, sounds like this is what you did. Next will be OpenVPN, both as extra security layers for TOR. That way I can just throw away an infected clone if I have to and clone another copy within VB and be good to go again.

From what I understand 19 is going to remain the base platform from now on without anymore major changes. Good... Make something that works and then just leave it alone as is. No need to keep redesigning stuff like MS, if it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it.

Something I need to share, I just loaded 19 in my wife’s computer as dual boot along with win 10. Went flawlessly but after trying to access the windows files through Linux like I can do with my win 7 dual boot I found that win 10 never actually turns off completely.

It is always in hibernation mode even after you think you have turned it off. So because it was in hibernation mode and sill running in the background it denied access to the files within it.

THAT’S why her laptop kept eating power from the battery even when it was supposed to be off. Win 10 is always on, it won’t let you turn it completely off. Just one more reason to get rid of win 10.

Have 'update' disabled.

What is new in 1809 that is of any value? Other than the fix to the data deletion module.
