White is the absence of color
Black is the presence of many colors

Huh? Have you noticed the ethnicities of people in commercials lately?

Cappucino. My daughter is anglo and hispanic. A couple of her teachers called her that.

Interesting thought, the government has long considered WASC/WASPs and Latins “caucasian”.

Hmmm, I don’t know, but I suspect that you are correct.

I dated a black lady for 7 years. She wore her hair straightened and pulled back into a pony tail.

She had this process done to her hair with lye, as I recall, and it seemed pretty uncomfortable to her. After it was done, she would not let it get anywhere near water. I tried to get her to go to the beach with me and she was just no. No, boy, no.

But, at the same time, her sister also used to get her hair done similarly, but then she would have it pressed into very unusual patterns, and I tell you that this girl was even more averse to water. If it was raining outside, and she was inside, she was mad, because the increased humidity would start messing up her hair.

Me, I just shave my head. As soon as my hair gets long enough that I have to pick up a comb to fix it, I shave it all off. Da heck wit’ it!

But yep, I think you are right, and I appreciate very much the blacksplain. I don’t want to be a dummy! <3

I know people who will use the “n-word” occasionally but not in hatred or because they think blacks are inferior, but as a descriptive term which was part of their vocabulary since childhood when it was acceptable.

They must all be in their eighties and nineties. The N word hasn't been acceptable since the late 40s, early 1950s. Even then, blacks considered the term to be insulting.

Even whites who innocently used the word in their childhoods in the 40s and 50s, long ago excised it from their vocabularies.

My favorite government policy is for “Hate Crimes.”

For purposes of counting victims, Hispanics are a separate category. “Latino/Hispanic.”

For purposes of counting perps, Hispanics are considered white.

When I was little, my mom used to tell us kids that one day, all the races would be blended together. She called it, 'cafe a'le' (coffee with cream).

Maybe your girl just didn’t want to get her hairdo wet. If her hair was permed, it couldn’t curl.

You’re correct about the lye solution. It’s still on the market, but much better formulated than in decades past.

`Cafe au lait’ is an old term (New Orleans?) for light-skinned.

Speaking of NO, what became of terms like quadroon and octoroon? FWIW, Thomas Jefferson’s reputed mistress Sally Hemings was only one eighth black.

I think what the deal was is that she did not have enough confidence in her swimming skills to swim in the Gulf of Mexico with me.

She could swim in a pool just fine, but open water is another matter.

And I always tried to go when the surf was big enough to ride a boogie board on, and it is definitely not easy to swim in high surf, even if you are a skilled swimmer. When we did go, she would always hold on to my back, and I would do the swimming, so I think that might have been the issue.

I dated her from 1989 to 1996 approximately, so yep it was a good while ago. I remember she used to sit in the chair while her mom was applying the perm just trying to suppress a scream from the lye the whole time.

You dated for seven years, but didn’t get married? That’s a shame. Sounds like you had a solid relationship.

I never had a girlfriend that long.

We didn’t get married because my family was not ... ah, sigh.

All I want to say on that is that she was a good girl, and her family was great. I loved them all very much.

I wish my family had seen things differently, but alas.

We had to go our separate ways, but we remained friends until she passed away at the age of 40 from an anneurysm, which made me very sad. She was the mother of a little boy and a little girl.

Actually, I don't know.

The statement from an obviously larger lipped and nosed black girl is incomprehensible.

Discussion is moot

cafe a'le' (coffee with cream).

That's spelled café au lait (coffee with milk). It's French, and the expression is thought to have originated with the racial mixing of French- and African-descended people in the region of Louisiana.

Black people aren’t ugly but I could see that someone who has swallowed the white people are all racists line could think we think all black people are ugly and in choosing to think they are really white adopt that view.

It’s kinda like that old joke where a little black boy bleaches himself and his family — mom, grandmother and then dad — are so upset that they spank him. Finally the grandfather asks his what he’s learned and his reply was something like: I’ve only been white a few hours and I already hate blacks.

Thank you. I'm excellent with English, but terrible with French spellings.

It's French, and the expression is thought to have originated with the racial mixing of French- and African-descended people in the region of Louisiana.

My mom is from Louisiana. No doubt, that's where she first heard the expression. She's got French/African ancestry, too.

Much appreciated.
