"Bringing on the Heartbreak-Def Leppard. More Than a Feeling-Boston"

How did I forget about those two? Definitely power ballads. Also, "Simple Man" by Skynard.

All I’ve ever heard from Metallica is high-speed thrash rock. But then never had an album or disc. Open to your suggestion.

"A critic writing in the liner notes for Dusty Springfield’s greatest hits wondered if You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me was the first power ballad."

Well keep wondering Mr. Critic, because it was not. Just another ballad.

"Hollywood Nights" was a cool fast rocker, but not a power ballad.

"Stop Draggin My Heart Around" was a slow ballad.

“Time Stand Still” by RUSH.

I had to do some searching, but SOMEBODY thinks that it's a power ballad.

“Seize this moment a little bit longer..”

Evidently you don’t know what a ballard
is. Marty Robbins was the king.

Never heard it. Carpenters?

Yup. Carpenters.

What counts as "best" though is pretty much a matter of taste or perspective. Just like some might prefer the power of a Louis Armstrong. Others, the artistry of a Bix Beiderbecke.

The entire internet disagrees with you on Sister Christian but of you could be right

You failed to notice I mentioned it due to the Wonderland movie, I’m a. little. old to consider Night Ranger an important band chronologically

It’s not a song I ever bought but it did become catchy in my memory after that disturbing movie as one of the few lighter moments kind of the way Stuck in the Middle did after Resevoir Dogs ..another grotesque movie

you claim REO commercial pap isn’t a power ballad that is just nonsensical....they owned power ballad s in the early to mid 80s and I’d say Arrowsmith did later ...as for the band I liked them for Golden Country and Riding the Storm Out albums early 70s ....Golden Country although a political screed qualifies for pre power ballad ...you can hear where the vocalist Cronin wanted to go....1972...I saw them twice thst earl era to watch Gary Richrath play guitar...and in small venues on d in a gym on a campus

As for Steven Tyler watch this

https://youtu.be/ga2ETgekOgg

I’ll be honest it’s never been my thing much that Northeast sound but I did admire Perry’s guitar

If you’ve never heard of poison or motley crüe or queensryche or pantera or Metallica or Cheap Trick or Guns and Roses or Cinderella or Meat Loaf power ballad attempts then you need to bone up

My post was simply about power ballads that to me weren’t walllowing in blatant commercial pap

Power ballads could and did ruin many a good rock bands authenticity and for me listenabilty but they did appeal to the dilettante and junior high school girls

All the hair bands did power ballads and aside from three of them I ignored them for it...those songs were horrible

Like Grateful Dead doing disco...trust me they did try

Thanks - was not aware of AC’s comment.

I saw an interview with Tony Peluso who said when he first played his solo, he chose to play in a very smooth Carpenter style.

Then Richard Carpenter stopped him and urged him to play in an aggressive manner and “just let it loose”.

The rest is history...and paved the way for more “Power Ballads”.

Shakedown Street....cringeworthy.

And speaking of cringeworthy, "power ballads" by '80s hair bands qualify.

More of a power trio sort.

I was at Ole Miss when Shakedown Street came out

We were anticipating

We were disappointed

It was like Black and Blue felt

Though Black and Blue grew on me

Not the official video for "Don't Tread", but the imagery suits the lyrics; Enjoy!!

I understand your argument though power ballad lines are obscure. suite Madame Blue was a great song. Some consider Lady to be a power ballad but I do not.
