Only surprise I can think of is Idaho State defeating Gonzaga. In the era of Trump, nothing in politics is surprising, least of all Trump/Republican victories. Makes for many humorous moments on fake news outlets.
Polarization more than expected: rural and exurban voters in red states drive a bigger-than-expected gain for Republicans in the Senate (3 or 4 seats) ... but a 40+ seat pick-up for Democrats in the House as Republicans lose a large share of their seats in California and the Northeast and a bunch of suburban seats in red states and swing states.

If you ask me it's because the media wants to portray the Democrats as the patriotic party and the Republicans as the anti-patriotic party. Notice the Republican Party has not been represented as blue since 1984, and then only by NBC.
I’m not quite as pessimistic about the House (not 40+ seats’ worth, at least hopefully not) however overall your prediction is very realistic.
My Ouija Board says Big Red Wave will hold the house and Senate Most of the Governor ships. Even Florida, Georgia and California. It will be a great night for the GOP.

Up until around the turn of the century Republicans were blue and Democrats were red. Somewhere in the dungeons of the media someone scratched their head and thought, “Gee, if we keep calling the Dems red some people are going to start associating that with communism.” And so an abrupt change was made.

I think it will be a big gain in the Senate and a modest gain in the house but I am also prepared for a night of CNN reporters seeing the House Majority drop by one or two votes and hearing them call it a great setback for the Trump Presidency.
