Why Is the NYT Suddenly Opposed to Declassifying the FISA Docs?
weekly standard ^ | September 24, 2018 | eric felton

In February, one reporter filed to have information about Carter Page’s warrant released. Now? The paper worries about ‘security concerns.’

Last Monday, President Donald Trump told the Justice Department and the FBI to declassify unredacted versions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant applications used to get wire-taps on Carter Page. The president also called for other materials—such as Bruce Ohr and Christopher Steele’s email correspondence—to be revealed. But by Friday, Trump had backed off, tweeting that the Department of Justice had persuaded him to let the DoJ inspector general vet the documents first. That way a “perceived negative impact on the Russia probe” could be avoided. It would also calm “key Allies” who had “called to ask not to release.”

But the pushback hadn’t just come from government. Some media made the case—a rather counterintuitive one for journalists to make—that the information not be released. Most prominently, the New York Times decried as terribly dangerous the very idea of making the FISA materials public. The headline of a September 18 article signaled the newspaper’s disapproval: "Ignoring Security Concerns, Trump to Make Russia Documents Public."

Gee, I wonder....hmmmm.
Maybe they have more “skin in the game” then they really care to have the public know about.

Why would that be?

Declassification before the mid-terms could have had a significant impact, afterward, not so much.

Re: “Why Is the NYT Suddenly Opposed to Declassifying the FISA Docs?”

Why has Trump made no serious effort to declassify and release ANY documents that relate to political corruption in the DOJ, the FBI, and the Intelligence agencies?

I can see a tactical reason to do it afterwards. If the Dems retake the House the GOP can go on the media offensive. If the GOP retains both houses, then the GOP is that much stronger in pursuing justice in the case of FBI collusion with HRC/DNC/Russia et al.

The UK and Australian diplomatic cries should be ignored imo. But in delaying, Trump earns a “chip” to be traded in later. There is good reason I’m sure to want to work with our allies on this matter, for negotiating purposes on other matters no reason to inflame passions at the wrong time - but ultimately imo all of it should be declassified.

And declassification should be a good pretext on which the DOJ should pursue criminal charges against the conspirators. I cannot imagine Trump would let this slide forever. Payback must be delivered, and justice must be done for the sake of the country. Either with or without control of the House timing could be used to advantage; either as a counter-attack or in a strong position to move the ball many yards at once.

1) They are still providing cover for HRC and her circle of conspirators

2) They are implicated somewhere down the line, in leaking information and bribing FBI officials for leaks

3) They are guilty of even more serious crimes that will flow from the release of this information and the investigations that will follow it

4) They are embarrassed or will be embarrassed for missing the boat on the full story

5) They will be exposed as the shills that they have been; and what flows from the investigation will contradict their ideology and previous reporting

And variations on the theme...

Because Rotten Rod has told Trump that Mueller will consider that obstruction of justice and add it to the long laundry list of crimes that he’s going to present to the new congress.

IOW, The DOJ is not only running a coup against the POTUS, they’re blackmailing him, too.

The DOJ are the conspirators for the most part.

Trump told Laura during his recent interview that the unredacted documents would be released after the midterms.

Yeah, the Pentagon Papers? Sure, we’ll print em’, but anything that hurts the dems gets buried by the NYts.

For example, if releasing the docs could in any way harm the Trump admin, then they’d be demanding they be released in full.

That’s why I don’t read the NYTs.

Talking out of both cheeks of their ass? the NYT’s is ethically and professionally corrupt as any media organization in the US and the competition is fierce for that position.

Goldman - a two-faced POS, a fool and a coward. Gee, he plays more positions on an issue than Stormy Daniels ever did on a bed.

The DOJ has been, that’s for sure. I hope that will change. Personally I think the FBI/DOJ immunity deals were in furtherance of the conspiracy and should be invalidated. A criminal in the DOJ can’t be permitted to give immunity to his/her co-conspirators.

There is another reason to delay - Trump may wish to try to wait out Mueller. He doesn’t want to give the left the ammo to say “you are only doing this to distract from/counter-attack the Mueller investigation. Once Muller wraps up, it will be a relatively open field to hunt the conspirators. Plus, with Mueller done Trump won’t continue to have that hanging over him, Mueller won’t be able to drag it on and dig into ridiculous aspects of Trump’s personal pre-political life but if this becomes a war of attrition the Democrats will surely demand he stay on and keep digging. Let Mueller finish, then it’s game on.

"Trump may wish to try to wait out Mueller."

This is a coup by the corrupt state. Muellers not going to stop until he's stopped or until he delivers the impeachment report to congress.

Trump's idiot lawyers and white house advisors have told PDJT to 'leave mueller alone'. Don't rock the boat. Let the coup take its course. Unbelievable, really. Sessions, RR, and mueller should have been fired the moment the special counsel was appointed. Then sent to gitmo.

DiGenova's take on rotten rod and why Trump has not declassified the documents

The only thing the NYT is good for is lining bottoms of bird cages and cat boxes. Also starting fires and wrapping dead fish. I’m sure there are many more uses but definitely not for reading. Totally fake.

Eh, never say never. Could happen any day, and maybe we wouldn't even know it in Lil Jeffie's case.

Unredacted?

If true, I will congratulate Trump for taking his first baby steps after 18 months of doing nothing serious to defend himself.

Trump is the Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Justice.

Trump nominated Rosenstein, and Trump interviewed Mueller for the FBI Director job.

If they are now persecuting and blackmailing him, he has only himself to blame.

In any event, Trump has the Constitutional and statutory authority to declassify and publicly release any document in the Executive branch.

He doesn't have to ask anybody.

He can access every document from his Oval Office computer and post them on the White House web site.

Instead, he does nothing.
