You nailed it. Satellites can be attacked. if self contained..., if EMP proof... this could be a game changer.

I saved this ETL thread to remind me how stupid I am.

Give it a decade and they will build a version that will fit in your Apple watch.
Remember, early GPS receivers were big bulky things.

I feel more oriented than ever. Of course, that's not much of a claim.

GPS works fine.

Until an enemy attacks the satellites, jams the signal, or spoofs the signal and sends you off course.

It also does not work underwater or underground, and it requires a receiving antenna, which is vulnerable on an armored vehicle.

Deep space probes can can not use GPS. There are lots of military reasons why GPS is not a universal solution.

All I need is a small saucer, some water, a piece of cork, a needle and a magnet. From that and the sky I can navigate anywhere.

Helps knowing where things are ahead of time so I’ll take a map as well.

I did not notice if it is EMP proof.

Whether it is or not, if there ever is an EMP, you won't need a compass any more.........................

You may also need a weighted string with knots (kamal) matching the latitude of known positions, an artificial horizon(IIRC Lewis & Clark used mercury?), Watch, knowing the time helps for longitude,A sky chart...
And do not forget your nautical almanac, you can get it on your phone... But you may need to find a Mickey D’s, before the batteries go dead on the phone.

I’ll wait for the Wrist strap version...................

Max Smart had a shoe phone back in the 60’s.
Just of late wrist phones are available.

I’m thinking a shoe phone had many advantages over today’s cell version; NO CRAPWARE!!!!
Max did not have root his shoe phone to simplify it!!!
And if he did root it, was he concerned that it might brick on him? Void the warranty? Piss of his corp support? Kaos could hack him?...NO
Shoe phone wins!
