Uptown Funk explained....
Many of the lyrics in this particular song appear to be chosen primarily to fit the music - and Ronson says that this was part of the writing process of the album:
“Lots of times, we had a melody alreadyand sometimes [Grammy-winning producer, Uptown Special co-producer] Jeff [Bhasker] would record a sketch vocal with nonsense words ‘but very specific vowel sounds’, because certain melodies work better when theyre sung with certain sounds. This meant that, when Michael came in to write lyrics, his words had to match the number of syllables in our melody and the vowels we had in mind.
The lyrics as a whole do not tell a story, but if you look at individual lines and sections, they make more sense.
This hit
That ice cold
Michelle Pfeiffer
That white gold
This one, for them hood girls
Them good girls
Straight masterpieces
Stylin’, wilin’
Livin it up in the city
Got Chucks on with Saint Laurent
Got kiss myself Im so pretty
This section is talking about looking good, and wearing jewellery and expensive branded shoes. (’Chucks’ = training shoes; Saint Laurent = the Yves Saint Laurent brand)
Im too hot (hot damn)
Called a police and a fireman
Im too hot (hot damn)
Make a dragon wanna retire man
Im too hot (hot damn)
Say my name you know who I am
Im too hot (hot damn)
Am I bad ‘bout that money
Break it down
Here he is talking about how “hot” (talented/desirable etc) he is, and how he has a lot of money.
Saturday night and we in the spot
A “spot” is a night club. So they are at the night club on Saturday night.
Girls hit your hallelujah
(here, “hitting a hallelujah” is a figure of speech meaning “sing”...)
So although there’s no story to the lyrics, there is a definite theme : being attractive, rich, talented and having an exciting social life. (Suites old Hollywood very well)
That was AWESOME, caww! Thank you so much for posting that, i’m kinda sick today and it brought joy to me.
Yes, beloved FRiends, this time I do have an appointment with an internal specialist on Monday but will go to ER if things get ugly.

Everybody always seems to be having so much fun when dancing on film. The ladies are so fit and sexy. I especially love the moves, the hand on hip, and quick upward glance of the gal at 16 seconds! Whew...
I watch this one again and again. And it’s all to Trump’s theme song. Don’t Believe Me Just Watch.
Not many movie dance scenes more amazing than Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tap dancing on roller skates!

Thanks for this! A keeper. Explains part of what makes this such an amazing song.
Iluminate used it for a number in their Off-Broadway show. Kids doing acrobatic dancing in the dark with lights on their costumes that make it look like something otherworldly.
Yes indeed.....School teachers have used this song for mob dancing for the students during half time as well.
It’s quite a popular song which appears to fit many events.
Absolutely incredible. THANKS!
It’s generally understood the next generations style of music appears to be âhorribleâ to the previous one. I’m a lover of how music is orchestrated in sound, rhythm and instruments used...and ten there’s the ‘art’ involved which makes it unique. This piece was perfect for what they were trying to accomplish as old Hollywood was all about glitz, glamor, dance money and alcohol then as it is now.
Rita Hayworth great in Staying Alive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz3CPzdCDws
I love it!
Fred Astaire was amazing.
Happy you found it entertaining to your liking. I did too...and glad I found it to share.
glorious! Loved seeing all the big production sets and tricky steps. Took me way back...
She was quite the cookie back in her day I think. I recall as a little kid the hunting cabin we’d gather at for club member outings had her picture everywhere....
That was great!! :)
Yep. I always get a laugh from peoples opinions and how they state them as if they are a fact of life. I believe it, therefore it is universal truth. People just dont seem to understand the concept that different taste in cars, music, movies, etc is what makes the world go round. Most people are shocked when they see the EXTREME variety of music this 50 year old white man has on his iPhone....for the reasons you stated. For me, people who are stuck in one genre of music, or just s couple, are generally pretty boring. But hey, what ever floats their boat. Im perfectly happy in my shuffle going from Winter by Vivaldi to Tupac and then to George Straight. Lol.
