AGOURA HILLS, Calif. Clouds of thick black smoke have engulfed the picturesque California hillsides as wildfires ravage the state. Santa Ana wind gusts started to pick up in Southern California, putting people near the Woolsey Fire on edge. More than 83,000 acres have burned and at least 170 homes were wiped out.
Matt Armbruster survived the fire by hiding in a creek with his dog to stay safe. Armbruster was told to evacuate, but he didn't. When the fire looked like it was coming for his home, he panicked and headed to a nearby creek.
Armbruster stayed there for almost two hours as the fire burned around him. He admitted that he thought he would die there. He was reluctant to share his story because not only did he survive, but so did his house when many in the area are returning to devastation.
Smart and lucky guy and dog.
That’s “Agoura Hills”, the a got lost in my cut and paste and noticed it only after it got posted. Sorry.
The Lord obviously has other plans for this man....and dog
That was my take as well
Not saying this is one of those , but people have been known to want to be involved and make up Stories.
This guy was reluctant to come forward, so he is not seeking fame.
A neighbor of ours at our cabin survived the Great Hinckley Fire in Minnesota in the 1890’s. She was just a kid, and went into a nearby lake with the rest of the townspeople. Except for the ones that couldn’t swim and afraid of the water.
400 square miles and 6 towns destroyed - all in four hours!
Gotcha
Climate change! :-)
Very surprised there was a Creek in So Cal with running water. This guy has no idea how fortunate he is, someone was looking down on him and the Pup.
Check out the Peshtigo (Wisconsin) Fire of Oct. 8, 1871. 1500-2500 killed when this was a very sparsely populated area. Same night as the Chicago Fire (the first one).

Actually, my husband told me the story about this a couple days ago.
Turns out a good friend’s son knew the guy.
Glad to know it is a real Heartwarming Story, so much garbage out there its a shame but makes you go hmmmm.
Most people only care about the dog.
My grandmother survived the great Salem (Massachusetts) fire 1912? 14? That struck the French quarter of the city. People were driven down to the river by the fire. Thankfully, there were a lot of boats and they saved lives. My great grandmother had 10 children, all survived.
Her husband worked in a city some 70 miles away, and when he learned of the fire, he WALKED all the way to Salem to find his family. It took him a bit to find them. They had been taken in by a very wealthy family, and were all safe.
If a forest is burning, there is enough oxygen for people to survive if they are in a large enough source of water. The fire sucks in wind from surrounding areas that is near ground level.
Oxygen is not the problem, but the heat is. Most people who die in structure fires die of smoke inhalation before the heat gets them.
This guy was not affected by the heat because he was in a large enough creek. That it was a flowing body of water made it even better.
Years ago during one of the fires, Race Car Driver Boris Said sent His Family off to Safety at another location as the fire neared His House. He stayed behind to keep wetting down the house in hopes of keeping it safe.
His emergency escape plan was put on his SCUBA Gear and get in the Pool as the fire passed. He got lucky as the fire took a different path.
that’d do it
