Say hello to electroaerodynamic propulsion
The feat was achieved using electroaerodynamic propulsion, which uses a pair of electrodes to push around ions and create ionic wind. The phenomenon has been known about since the 1960s (in fact, Apple even considered using it to cool its laptops back in 2012), but this is the first time its been used to propel a plane.

Sniff sniff, smell the ozone?
And does it “pollute?”

Does this mean I can have a “hover conversion” kit put on my DeLorean?

unless one took the step to glue them.
And that would sometimes screw up the CG.

Yeah, it is the amps that makes for the weight.
With a series of simple circuits, you can easily get 40,000 volts out of a one ounce battery.
But, I’d imagine it would take a lot of amps to keep an aircraft in flight for even a few moments.
Where is John Galt’s motor when you really need it?

I built a hovercraft (kind of) 20 years ago out of balsa, aluminum foil and an neon sign transformer. It hovered but you had a cable dragging below. They are going to need a Mr. Fusion to power this thing.

Needs an amps/payload graph, and more details on the battery.

If you got hold of it the wrong way you’d think it was full of eels.

The balsa plane came to mind first...

Bungee launch. Probably a 1% net propulsion measured.

Maybe update that to a steam catapult,
With a ramjet to continue on?
