Say hello to electroaerodynamic propulsion
The feat was achieved using electroaerodynamic propulsion, which uses a pair of electrodes to push around ions and create ionic wind. The phenomenon has been known about since the 1960s (in fact, Apple even considered using it to cool its laptops back in 2012), but this is the first time its been used to propel a plane.

A few thousand miles of electrical extension cord and wallah!
Seriously for a sec...
I’m waiting for the first case of ion poisoning.

As with all so called neat inventions scaling up is the challenge and usually impossible It's that small percentage of neat inventions, where somebody figures out how to actually scale it up to useful size, range, etc, and at a cost-effective price, which make the inventor rich.

"MIT researchers create plane that flies without any moving parts" So this airplane flies without moving? That must be some trick.

Sometimes. If they are working for an academic or govt lab all rights have already been signed away

I'd give props to MIT, but, uh, apparently they don't need 'em.

Ironically the original was written by John Denver. An experimental aircraft was the death of John Denver.

Sometimes. If they are working for an academic or govt lab all rights have already been signed away Perhaps. The rights would be for the basic "proof of concept" device. If a lot of engineering work needs to be done to make it a viable product, but they think they CAN make a viable product, then the researchers can create a corporation to do that, license the basic technology, patent the incremental technology needed to make it a real product, and make money.

Not if it had anything to do with what the person was working on. If it is something completely apart from job duties then you can do as you suggest
Case law is very clear on this

Not if it had anything to do with what the person was working on. What I said was "but they think they CAN make a viable product, then the researchers can create a corporation to do that, license the basic technology, patent the incremental technology needed to make it a real product, and make money."
Yes, the university would own the rights to the basic innovation. The researcher would present them with a deal:
"You can partner with me, allow us BOTH to make money on this, and I will proceed with some ideas I have that may make this a profitable product. Or I can drop it, forget my ideas, and go to work on my next grant project. What do you say?"

You don’t understand the case law. It has gone to court. Many times.

Looks like it was mostly powered by a rubberband catapult... and a wound up rubber band probably has more stored power.
