FULL TITLE: 'This is the THANKS we get!' Trump warns General Motors he'll cut ALL its government subsidies in retaliation for closing U.S. auto plants

President Donald Trump threatened to punish General Motors following the company's decision to shutter Midwest manufacturing plants and lay off thousands of U.S. workers.

A day after the news of the layoffs rattled the industry and raised a potential political problem for the president, the president followed up on an earlier threat that the automaker 'better damn well' open a new plant.

He threatened to yank subsidies for electric cars – as GM seeks to reconfigure its supply chain, jettison unpopular models, and refocus on vehicles it thinks will sell in the future.

'Very disappointed with General Motors and their CEO, Mary Barra, for closing plants in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland. Nothing being closed in Mexico & China,' Trump tweeted Tuesday while a televised White House press briefing was going on.

'The U.S. saved General Motors, and this is the THANKS we get! We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including.... for electric cars,' he continued.

Trump's warning comes a day after laid off General Motors workers were seen wiping their tears away after the company axed thousands of people without warning and just before the holidays.

The plants that are closing are the ones Barack insisted stay open due to mph requirements. People want SUVs and Crossovers and not the Dolt electric which they are closing.

Part of the bailout requirements.

The Cruz or whatever it’s called is being terminated due to crappy sales. What they should do is retrofit the plants in the US and move plants in Canada to the US.

But she’s a globalist and follows Obama’s orders as has been reported.

I’ve always been a Mopar guy, they always pay back.

Not happy my Challenger R/T is assembled in Canada, that needs to be brought back too.

GM has always been garbage quality.

GM killed their slowest selling, least profitable cars. This is what companies do. It’s called survival. I saw an analysis of why. It’s largely because of the fuel efficiency standards and how they are calculated into the fleet average. Take the same engine transmission and amount of metal and call it a truck, and it falls under different rules. As for closing those plants; a plant is a highly specialized machine that usually makes only the products its machines were specifically designed for. They can’t easily or cheaply be converted and, if sales don’t justify the money to convert, they will stay closed until sales improve and they are needed for added capacity. The market is no longer there. People who need cars have cars. There is fierce competition for those who want to buy a new car and in almost every case, the competition produces a more desirable product than GM. In my opinion, GM will no longer exist as it is today in a mere ten years. Obama’s rescue of GM hurt everybody involved except the Democratic party and the union.

As for the Volt, it has never sold well even when there were huge taxpayer paid incentives to buy it. It was a product the market didn’t want.

Much as I despise GM as a company, I don’t think this action would have been taken if it weren’t to counter government regulation. Ford recently did the same thing.

Same experience for me. Company car last year was a Malibu, at 80000 miles all oil leaked out, car was salvaged. Toyota is my brand.

Exactly - but as long as “Government Motors” is taking our money, they have to expect to find some strings attached.

What's dirty about cutting production of cars that don't sell?

He threatened to yank subsidies for electric cars

Good! Those subsidies shouldn't exist at all, for anybody.

That’s VERY interesting. We have an ‘09 Outback, and a couple years back, my mechanic (for stuff “more than I can handle”, either due to lack of expertise, tools, or time) discovered that the driver’s side front brake pads were worn more than any others, leading him to discover one of the pistons was “hanging up” in it’s cylinder - therefor the brake was not releasing fully, causing the excessive wear. He replaced it, and it failed again in a year. We replaced it again, and it AGAIN failed, this time in a little under a year. THIS time I could not get the car to him (he’s over 300 miles away*), so, he shipped me a new set of parts (pads, brackets, and “semi-loaded caliper” — the rotor was still ok as I caught the problem early on, this time.) We switched to NAPA brand parts - I installed them, and, so far, so good. My mechanic believes that there is something about the piston design in the calipers that is faulty, as he has been seeing this type problem fairly frequently, recently, mostly in other brands than Subaru. (He doesn’t have a lot of Subaru owners as customers.)

Interestingly, only our Subie’s driver’s side front brake has had problems. Even more interesting, our ‘04 Matrix now has the same problem in the same location.

Mine was rusting.

I replaced the fronts in the spring and the backs in the fall.

Twice a year, paying out for a full set of brake parts for one end or the other.

Our mechanic said that a lot of Subaru’s had that problem. Something about the design of them.

When we got some of our inheritance from my m-i-l in 2016 before the elections, I told mr.mm that I wanted a new vehicle. The Subaru was nickel and diming us to death, was 7 years old and God knew what was going to happen with the elections, and the economy if Hillary won.

I wanted the new vehicle, something that would last a long time while our money was still worh something and the vehicle could still be had.

The UAW is all about workers. Viva la revolution! Schadenfreude:

2009 ...with the bankruptcy filings of General Motors and Chrysler, and the transfer of stock ownership from the firms' long-suffering shareholders to the government and unions, communists of the world can rejoice. The workers are now, finally, significant owners of the means of production. The United Auto Workers control about 65 percent of Chrysler and 17.5 percent of General Motors.
