Jalen Hurts returns the favor to lead Alabama to SEC Title

In the end, a committee of the establishment, by the establishment and for the establishment arrived at the safe and predictable decision establishmentarians tend to make. Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame were easy calls. Then it got hard. And when it got hard, the College Football Playoff selection committee chose 12-1 Oklahoma for its fourth and final spot, over 11-2 Georgia. It was the far less controversial choice, for the following reasons: * It allowed a third Power Five conference room at the feed trough, as opposed to keeping the majority of the five out.

I am just the messenger. UGa had their shot and blew it. Let OU have their shot at 'Bama.

Oh geez. They got it wrong because for years they told the Big12 they had to have a championship game to be considered. They let Notre Dame in. Hell Notre Dame should have at LEAST dropped to #4.

Georgia lost they are out. They didn’t win their conference. It wouldn’t be fair to Alabama to put them in there and make them play again either. Georgia should have moved to #7 behind all the teams that did win their conference title game. They screwed that up too.

This is pretty much like it was before the tournament...people arguing. They need to get go to 8 teams. 5 big conferences get automatic bids. The other 3 will be by bogus selection (like it is this year). But no more than 2 teams from a single conference allowed.

When sports champion slots involve choices of a committee...it isn’t a championship. I’m not sure what you would call it exactly, but it’s not a championship.

Mr. Forde cites Sagarin strength of schedule as a metric in support of UGa. Sagarin rates Notre Dame #7 overall with the 42th strength of schedule behind both OU and THE Ohio State University.

woulda coulda shoulda

Oklahoma essentially undid their previous loss of the season by beating Texas in a rematch. They get the nod.

I hope UGA doesn’t fall into depression and lose in the Sugar Bowl as SEC teams tend to do when they lose the SEC championship game.

I hope Bama gets rid of their jitters and plays to win against OU.

As many of the wags said this morning, the 4 teams in the playoff beat every team on their schedule. In Oklahoma’s case, their loss was to Texas, who they beat in the Big 12 Conference Championship.

As opposed to Georgia, who lost to LSU and didn’t win their Conference. Or Ohio State, who lost badly to Purdue, even though they destroyed Michigan and won handily in their Conference Championship.

Ya gotta win to get in. And neither Georgia nor Ohio State won the games they had to win.

Agree. I for one am not interested in watching a third match between Alabama and Georgia. Having said that, I do believe that Georgia is probably the third best team in the country and Oklahoma is probably fourth. However, there would be “hell to pay” by Norte Dame fans if their undefeated team had not been given a seat at the table. The four teams selected are ok with me. But, I predict that Clemson is going to take ND to school...

They should have planned to go to an eight team playoff this year, with plans to go to sixteen in a couple of years.

That's what they got wrong.

Every few years ND needs an arse kicking to remind them their glory days happened a long time ago.

Something wrong with his program. Clemson had a MUCH EASIER schedule than ND.

They need to get go to 8 teams.

I've always been against the tournament getting too big. FCS started as a 4-team tournament. It now has 24 teams -rediculous!

But this year convinces me that they should expand the tournament. Eight teams makes everybody play in the first round. Six teams would mean #1 and #2 get byes into the second round.

But I agree with the committee's selection of the 4 teams.

IF they go to a 8 team playoff, then the conferences need to be balanced out—changed completely if need be.

Teams like Notre Dame need to be put into a conference, too, where they have to play rivals just like everyone else, and win their conference like any other team if they want a chance in the arena.

This would entail some of the biggest changes in 100 years, and perhaps do away with decades old rivalries, but if you’re going to make a real playoff system, you need to balance the conferences.

We just finished the first round of a 10 team playoff. Five power conferences held five championship games with a total of ten teams involved. People still argue.

Sure, it’s a bad thing for a team that barely lost to be out of the hunt. That’s football. Win or go home.

Hold a playoff of eight teams....after all the players pass a SAT and ACT exams.

Our service academies may win every year.

Huh? Win or go home? UCF won and they went home? It makes no sense.

Football is NOT an elite committee of people (many of which voted BEFORE Saturdays games were played) picking who they *think* is best.

No need to balance them out. some years the SEC is tough others they aren’t. Just like it is today. I remember when the PAC10 used to be tough.

Notre Dame should not be in it this year either. They didn’t win this week...so they should be out. But since they aren’t we know that money is the real talker here and notre dame in the tournament makes big money. So let them get in as one of the 3 bogus elite picks. The committee gets 4 bogus picks this year so they lose one in an 8 team tournament. Small steps. No way would they agree to give up all their power to influence the money.

Lol, instead of the last two teams playing a game, they hold a “College Bowl” quiz show, with the winning team being crowned National Champion.

It’ll be 8 teams next year. There’s too big an outcry, both from fans and media.

And of course Oklahoma deserves the playoff. They’re a powerhouse.
