Massive lion fends off more than 20 hyenas during attack, wild video shows

In a moment one could imagine as a harrowing scene straight out of Disney’s “The Lion King,” footage shared by BBC Earth recently captured a lion’s intense struggle to fend off more than 20 hyenas.

The lion, named Red, appears to unknowingly venture into a hyena territory -- a move that could have easily ended in his demise.

The fight ensues for several moments as the lion growls at the cackling hyenas, who paw and bite at him.

At one point, Red’s energy appears to fade.

Watched the entire video the other day. Wondered why the lion didn’t make mincemeat out of one or two hyenas. Seems that might have convinced the rest to back off. Would committing to a fulll attack leave his hindquarters at risk? Tire him out faster?

You can tell this was a young male. He was flummoxed by the attack.

If he had started killing hyenas one by one, they would have stopped.

Yes, the big guy kept his hind quarters to the ground as much as possible. Hyenas have an extremely powerful bite. One of them could have easily broken one of his hind legs if he had tried to take the time to kill one of the hyenas. Big cats kill either by a strong bite breaking the neck or crushing the Adams Apple. Hyenas have a powerfully built neck, it would have taken the cat a long time to kill a hyena like that. The other method big cats kill is by suffocation, clamping down on their preys nose and mouth and that would have taken too much time, exposing his hind legs to a bone crushing bite and he would have been finished off quick.It's touching to see how both of the big cats were nuzzling each other, happy to be alive. That ‘’Tatu’’ saved Red's life for sure.

I agree and would add you can find a few You Tube videos where a lion does almost kill a hyena but it still lives. Maybe with crippling injuries. Not of course when there are several hyenas around. Its interesting how the lion never considered running away. They’ll run from bigger animals but not these things.

You also notice on these videos that once the pride male shows up the hyenas scatter. The hyenas will try to harass lionesses off a kill but want no part of an adult male lion.

Still, I would think a swipe of those bayonet-sized claws driven by jackhammer strength leg muscles would get the tormentor’s attention. I suppose the heyenas are too quick and shifty to target effectively.

Exactly. Had the big guy gotten one it wouldn’t have mattered. Hyenas can break a thigh bone with one bite. Their jaws are incredibly powerful. If they had done that the old boy would have been finished. Damn good thing his buddy showed up.

I’m willing to bet that one of the ones we saw get swiped either bled out in the hours after the fight or actually died in the video but the cameraman missed it because the action took the lion somewhere else fending off other prey. Some of those swipes could easily kill a hyena.
