An Ohio father punished his daughter by making her walk five miles to school in 36 degrees after she was thrown off the bus for bullying. Matt Cox of Swanton said in a Facebook post that his 10-year-old daughter was suspended from the school bus last Friday. This was the second time that she had gotten into trouble for bullying. The young girl told her father that he would have to drive her to school for an entire week.

Same conditions in my school days but “the snow was so deep, we had to walk along the telephone wires.”

Gee...I wonder how kids got to school before every family had a car, and before school buses?

It was probably 75 degrees year-round, right?

Oh well, on slow news days the media has to grovel for a subject.

That is amazing! In Alabama, freezing is below 32 DegF. Ohio is apparently different.

....as long as you didn’t take your eye off of her (i.e. guarded her) the whole way, good job Dad!

Well, my Dad had to walk 6 miles to school every day for 12 years when he was a kid.

Uphill. Both ways.

My thought as well. I’m guessing he made her walk only 1 of the days to teach the lesson and then drove her the other 4. Between that and posting her shame for the world to see I’m guessing that it got the point across.

That being said I’d love to know more about what the bullying was about. I’ve seen many cases where it was a defensive response to prevent harassment of the bullier from others.

My only concern would be, in this day and age, that some one would abduct her, so I’d probably want to find a different way, if it was my kid.

That's what I was thinking. I seldom see kids waiting for a school bus without a parent waiting with them. According tom the article, the dad drove behind her.

I used to all the time, I did it with ice and snow on the ground. 5 miles isn’t that far, I used to go 15 miles and took side streets and crossed fields to cut the time down.

I don’t agree with posting on Facebook. A lot of lawyers these days have a social media policy in our fee agreements that the client is required to shut down the social media during the representation.

“Actually, no. Many species exert dominance over others of their kind. Kindness is a learned behavior.”

Many times, when my own kids were small, I said that children are wild animals that have to be domesticated. Just like any animal the training may or may not take.
I got nervous laughs and strange looks in response.
The only person who agreed with me was the local juvenile probation officer.

“Well see, that’s my point, if I had to follow her, I’d still have to pay the consequences for her behavior.

So I’d probably take away her cell phone, TV, after school dances etc. Ground her for several weeks from all things she loves.

I’d still drive her to school, but I’d never shut up about it. I’d be crabby all the way. She’ be begging to walk.”

No, parents do NOT do the old “take away their cell phone”. These days a cell phone is a safety requirement. This irritates me to no end in my family law cases. That is the the worst thing the parent can do. It leaves a child vulnerable to God knows what. DO NOT TAKE AWAY THE CELL PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

'Parents need to hold their kids accountable. That was me showing how I hold my kid accountable,' Cox told WTVG-TV.

'I'm not going to be another parent that's just going to brush things under the rug and say kids will be kids.'

So, what is it, Mr. Dad of the Year? Are you trying to be a good parent, or an attention-seeking narcissist?

This whole story is a story because DAD POSTED A PRIVATE MATTER ONLINE. Back in the day, parents would handle this privately and not make this a public spectacle. Now Dad gets his 15 min of fame and if he's lucky his daughter will behave or, more likely, she will hold this against him the rest of his life.

I am not saying his daughter should get away with bullying. But I AM saying Dad seems more interested in displaying to the world how bitchin' he is at parenting.

when my kid was a teen, she snuck out of the house and got into a minor car accident.
She had to go to driving school for a day. I told her i absolutely would NOT accompany her to class- if her dad did not do it, she was SOL.
alot of people thought i was wrong, but as far as i was concerned, if she had listened to me in the 1st place, there would not have been an accident.

Something like this would NEVER have made the news when I was little as it was common for parents to parent.

If I’m picking the kid up, taking her to school, and she’s grounded at home with me, and going no where else, I don’t see that taking away a cell phone so that she’s not texting all day long is a safety problem-it certainly would not be where we live.

Bullying is not a learned behavior, it is the natural default behavior. It requires civilizing to train out of children.

Yeah. About a half hour. No biggie.

I lived in the Bronx and next to a large park. I walked the road next to the park and enjoyed the little bit of nature the Bronx could afford. I went to a Catholic parochial school. I was always on time. My buddy lived across the street from the school and was always late. The nuns were none to pleased with lateness.

I now have health issues that prevent me from walking more than 100 yards. I miss the ability to walk.
