People use “Democracy” as shorthand for “Republic” in the same way some people use “Liberal” as shorthand for “Leftist”.

People use “Democracy” as shorthand for “Republic” in the same way some people use “Liberal” as shorthand for “Leftist”. That is correct. Keep in mind, though, that both republics and "true" democracies both suffer from this issue he is talking about in this video, so just pretend he is talking about republics as well.
