In his illustrious 50-year career, screenwriter Andrew Davies has forged a formidable reputation for creating strong female characters. But now he says he is not allowed to make his women anything but feisty – by the powerful female executives who run television. Davies, who is known for adaptations of classics such as Pride And Prejudice and War & Peace, says bosses want to see an image of themselves projected on screen, and veto any 'droopy, soppy' girls he wants to pen.

If Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskill or the Bronte sisters created “soppy” female characters, who do these “female bosses” think they are to try to have them changed?
BBC radio and TV is targeted at women and minorities exclusively. Literate muslim women must feel right at home.
Women love to watch their female action heroes in the movies delivering beatdowns to every male opponent they happen upon... and that’s fine... until they start believing what they watch is true rather than fantasy.
He does. He's also written some clunkers like the 21 century remakes of Brideshead Revisited and A Room With a View. His lady bosses ought to be telling him not to remake things if he can't improve them.
I love watching British dramas and mysteries. Every one of the detective shows has a female in charge.
