Please, Star Wars, Let Poe Dameron, or Any Hero, Be Gay
The Mary Sue ^ | December 29, 2018 | Kate Gardner

Posted on 12/29/2018 8:47:17 AM PST by EdnaMode

Today is the last Friday of the year, and also the last day that Twitter is featuring #SWRepMatters, a Twitter campaign designed to talk about representation in all forms in the Star Wars universe. This runs the gamut from racial and ethnic representation to sexuality to disabled rep, with each month focusing on a new identity. As the year comes to a close, the founders of the event have used today to talk about the ways in which Star Wars did right by rep this year, and where they still need to grow.

We’re a year out from Episode IX now, and none of the films have included a character who identifies as being part of the LGBT+ community. Fans have speculated about the character of Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac, since he bit his lip and offered Finn (John Boyega) his jacket.

Screenwriter Jon Kasdan and star Donald Glover implied that Lando Calrissian might be pansexual, but the onscreen rep for that seems to be his romantic interest in his female-identified droid rather than any actual flirtation or romance with a male character. Rian Johnson said there was no room for sexuality in his film The Last Jedi, all while talking about how Rey and Kylo’s fingers touching is a sex scene.

Now, we’re four films into the new Star Wars, some might say. Give them time. But the problem is is that we shouldn’t have to wait in 2018, almost 2019, for a major franchise that’s been around for over 40 years to recognize that LGBT+ characters might exist. A line about Poe’s boyfriend wouldn’t have dragged down The Last Jedi any more than an unnecessary shirtless Kylo Ren scene did.

A lot of artistic license was used in the Dune movie, which is their right I suppose as long as the original author doesn’t disagree. The Baron in the movie was an evil sadistic psychopath while in the book he was more calculating and complex, but still evil. I actually liked the series better for its accuracy, although it did get a little boring near the end. But as I said, I read the Dune books but didn’t find them all that compelling.

Eh, technically, C-3PO’s asexual since he’s a droid and thus wouldn’t even have the desire for sex.

And honestly, Mary Sue hasn’t heard about what Solo did to Lando Calrissian by turning him pansexual, or how that was apparently one of the contributing factors to it bombing in the box office (to say little about the scorn against The Last Jedi). So no, using gays as the heroes is a TERRIBLE idea for Star Wars, especially considering all the crap it’s been dealt already.

Eh, to be fair, said English boarding school had both sexes as students, and aside from that, there were plenty of professors of both sexes. Besides, I’m pretty sure heads of Catholic boarding schools in England aren’t gay (or at least, they’re not SUPPOSED to be that).

And honestly, I really didn’t see Dumbledore as being gay at all until JK Rowling dropped that bombshell. Maybe if he behaved like General Blue from Dragon Ball when he encountered Bulma here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLfcQgJ47cU or heck, how Otokosuki acted towards Trunks in Dragon Ball Z here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBTQrNeg7Ow I might at least get some sense he was gay. But as it is? He came across as at most asexual.

Honestly, with the possible exception of Episode VIII and maybe Episode VII, I’d argue I was made into an “Episode Never Again” upon learning that Lucas actually did base not just the Ewoks, but also the Rebels on the Vietcong since 1973. That definitely was a massive betrayal for me, especially when I viewed the Rebels as being the American Minutemen, or at the very least the French Resistance. To have him bash his own country of origin and hail our enemies, the guys who would slaughter their own people, especially religious people of various stripes, simply for a sheer laugh to bring about Marxism... it’s... it’s just...! (Yells in the air with anguish). Thanks to that, I have to root for the bad guys, and I normally make it a point to avoid doing that, even those I actually sympathize with, that’s the problem.

And honestly, if Lucas were still around, I’m willing to bet that he would eventually sign off on gay stories (in fact, technically, he already did with some of the later EU stories), and I don’t mean that in a good way, obviously.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm and Star Wars they got everything except the theatrical showing rights to the movies already made. Those rights were still retained by 20th Century Fox. Granted it wasn’t a huge market left for such theatrical rereleases but that bit still remained outside of Disney control. Ta da...Disney buys Fox Studios earlier this year for a whopping $71 billion and complete control of Star Wars is now within Disney.

Well, I’d start out with an amazing sauté and worry about what happens after dinner another time. ;)

A smoking R2-D2 that smells of weed? That might be funny to see.

Yes, even though I celebrate my masculinity, unlike liberal males, I cringe at men usurping the significance and worth of womanhood.

One of the main problems with the change in the system is that women don’t wait to be asked anymore. It has become acceptable, and, so called, sexy, for a woman to be aggressive. And I’m a firm believer that women have just as much an ego as men and are far more competitive with each other than men are. And with the historical allowance of their public showing of emotion being also accepted, they can show the whole gambit of emotions to include anger, hatred, and jealousy to the point of violence and it is considered justifiable.

Hey, they wanted to be equal. I let them. But they will have to open my door sometimes. Privilege comes with responsibility. So choose wisely ladies.

Nice pan. You two will make a cute couple. Not to mention a starring role on the internet.

Solo...

That’s closer, and was pretty good IMHO, but its timing made it stink at the box office.

Rogue One was the best quality in a long time, IMHO.

Well, that one may be cute and shiny, but how about those times when you're trying to cook something up out in the wilds, over the old campfire...

Yes, it was a shame Solo had to follow TLJ, a/k/a “Men suck” so closely.

But I wasn’t commenting on the poor box office, just the film itself.

I mean, don’t you want to know what happens after Qi’ra flies away to be with Darth Maul? Rogue One was good, but since it ended at the beginning of Episode IV, it sort of had no where to go.

Wasn’t 1980s Flash Gordon gayer than Star Wars?

No.

What in the world made you think Hogwarts was Catholic?

It was no bombshell. It's right in the open in the last book.

I did not know that. I’m horrified. Leftists and especially those Hollywood leftists are beyond redemption.
