This whole new subscription thing is just stupid and makes everything WAY more expensive. What used to be $100 (and always works!) is now $50+ a month, and goes to severely restricted mode once you stop paying. If it even works at all. Sad that everyone is doing it - Adobe, Microsoft, many CAD developers, etc.
Microsoft is the Big Blue of the 21st Century. Now unable to get out of its own way and unable to change.
“I like the illusion of owning my software.”
And that’s it in a nut shell. Even though you have to pay for and buy MS it never really belongs to you. It always belongs to them.
There is a simple way out of the extortion...
I have remote backup. Everything I need, including a clone of my system drive I carry in my truck. :)
That’s the way to do it, I do too now. But I screwed up when I first installed it. I got so excited that it was working, and it was working so well, that I forgot to do it right away with the fresh install. So I had downloaded a few things that may have affected the install default settings or drivers before I made a backup and mirror.
I haven’t tried it yet, but I wonder if the install program will give me an option to overwrite just all the default without affecting my now installed programs, folders, and files. It’s working just fine with no hiccups at all but that being in the back of my mind still bugs me. lol
They will put out a patch to fix the broken crap caused by the last patch and create 500 new problems with the 1 patch they just put out.
Just like 5000 times before.
I’ve had Win-7 Pro x64 running on 2 2009 HP commercial/industrial grade HP Compaq 6000 Pro Microtowers, and I have no intention of changing. Eff MS.
You and me both brother. I use Virtual Box with an XP VM for just those occasions when I need Windows for...something. But those occasions are getting fewer and fewer. Twice per year maybe?
What Is Microsoft Up To? NO GOOD!!!
Playing Forrest Gump...
You mean do a repair install of W/10 but keep your programs, folders, and files? Yes, that is an option:

Microsoft gives a steep discount for many companies. I paid $14.99 for the full Office 2019. At stores it is $400 !

If I could not then I would buy an older version at Ebay. Prices are under $30

I would not pay a monthly payment for a office program or Windows!
#20 “My wifes employer requires the current version of IE to log in”.
IE11 is getting old so Microsoft came up with Edge which hardly anyone uses so they are coming out with a re-imaged one using google’s ‘open source’ Chromium which will include a “fake news” filter called Newsguard that will alert you you fake news and only seems to do so with any conservative website. So no one will use the new Edge!

Appreciate you taking the time to put that together but I should have clarified I was talking about the default Linux installer I have.
If my Win 7 ever quits, That part of my drive will be reformatted and I will be done with windows for good.
They rarely do not just quit and cannot be restored and with the product key (run cmd: slmgr.vbs /dlv) you should be able to download the ISO for free from MS here to do a repair install from there. If it's free (thank God) why not?
Unless the drive fails, I would think you might be better off buying a 120GB SSD drive (about 21.00) and keep the W/7 just in case.
For me, besides seeing no reason to switch, I cannot get Linux to do certain things I easily can do with Windows, plus the legality of proprietary multimedia coeds is what keeps me from using Linux on my own PC as my main OS. When i do install it as a secondary OS on a desktop i usually unplug all the drives but one and install Linux on that, then replug the others back in. Then i can configure the BIOS to boot from one drive but tap the F11 key during booting to bring up a list of boot devices. Thank God there are alternatives.
IE11 is getting old so Microsoft...
A bit of fun, it is a government agency that my wife works for! Years back 90+% of the IT department was fired for phony invoices, kickbacks, overpaying...
The leaders should be out of jail by now? YES, they were convicted and sentenced.
I understand about the windows. My original curiosity was whether my Linux live CD and install program also gives the option to overwrite just the OS files and folders without affecting my existing personal files and folders. But I could just copy them off and put them back after a fresh install if need be. Just curious...
I hardly ever use Windows anymore, and if it quits I will not miss it one bit and will be formatting that partition as storage. I only have one application I need windows for, and as soon as I get that one to work on Linux I’m completely done with Windows for good. :)
I am sure CNN has looked into creating its own browser. One can only imagine the censorious nature that would be.
