Well, I think we can all cut Officer Joe Friday a bit of slack for not being on the cutting edge of 'hip'.

Yeah, which is ironic because he was really heavy into the west-coast jazz scene, married a jazz singer (Julie London), and, in Sunset Boulevard, played a hip cat who tried to draw Joe Gillis (William Holden) out of his bad scene.

In 1950 he was hip and cool, by 1960 he was a heavy working for Chief Parker, and by 1970 he was just disgusted, rousting long-hairs and counting the days till he could retire.

Speaking of which, I better go retire. Stay cool, Windy.

Joe Friday was awesome.

Yeah, he was. He was so good in that role, I never knew his real name. Still don't.

“Able Baker Charlie to Roger Fox Dogs....Able Baker Charlie to Roger Fox Dogs...”

“Hey man, somebody’s really talkin’ bad about Roger, man!”

Took me years to finally get that one!

Bogart. They forgot Bogart. Yeah, if you lived through the 70’s, you know what I am talking about.

CBs became a fad in the 70s and non-truck drivers bought them for their homes and cars.

My 77 Pontiac Grand Prix came with one installed from the factory. I played with it awhile, then took it out.

Guess that was before Bobby Troup got her. All I remember about her was as "Nurse Dixie" on "Emergency".

Hadn’t heard that bit.

My understanding is that black people didn’t do acid much (by the 70s?). Jimi Hendrix was considered an anomoly.

But the George Clinton/P-Funk crowd were black and did do acid. A member of his band recruited Fred Wesley from James Brown’s band giving him some acid. Fred essentially ‘got off the (tour) bus’ and told James ‘f-this!’ and signed up for the new party.

Also I’ve been led to believe that PCP (aka angel dust) was a problem in the black community (a different psychedelic high).

I can’t stand the use of the word “bro.”

Me and all the old bastards I know still use it. It's one of the few slang words of our youth that still lingers.

I still use a few of these, though not often. Some I never head back in the day. I can also think of a few that weren’t mentioned.

I knew a girl in the 80s that said “Cool Beans” all the time.

A lot of us did. Still hear it on occasion. I don't think it's ever completely played out.

I would never have thought of Neil Young and Devo ever knowing each other, let alone Neil helping their debut.
I guess he had a better sense of humor back then.
I’m glad Neil didn’t try to become LIKE Devo.
Can you imagine?
